11 warning signs of depression

I think another thing to keep in mind on this front is that getting what you want or good news is NOT a cure. I think there is a type of depression - 'atypical depression' that has this particular trait of going away when something good happens, but always coming back. It sounds like I'm trying to be a downer probably but actually I've found that recognizing this helps me be more prepared and mindful.

It's brain chemistry + a pattern of thinking and attribution and is really less dependent on external circumstances than one might believe.

Exactly. I for one would love it if what I want worked out, but in the end I just want to be able to work with what I've got and be happy right now. If I'm only up when things are going good and down when things aren't going my way I'm never going to be able to function.

I agree. Happiness and sadness are passing phases for everyone. Being more predispositioned toward one or the other has a lot to do with individual make up, I think. Keeping oneself in good physical health helps a lot to gravitate oneself towards more positivity, ime.
