11 warning signs of depression

I don't know if I ever was (or am) clinically depressed (1, 4, 8, 9, and 11 sound like me), but I do know that any depressive feelings I've had had to be kept to myself.

As a teen and young adult I got one of three responses to "I'm feeling really down":

"Buck up and quit yer b****ing! You've got it good!" This typically came from people much older than me that must have thought that I just wanted attention.

"That's nothing - my problems are so much worse than yours. I'm now going to describe all of them in detail and be sure to constantly point out how meaningless YOUR problems are, so you will feel like an ass for saying anything." This typically came from peers and especially girlfriends.

or

"Oh, Bull****!" That was the favorite of the school principal. Once again the assumption was that I just wanted attention.

None of this made me feel any better, but it transformed most of my sadness into intense, powerful hatred for other people. Conservation of negative energy, I guess.....But I'd rather be hateful than sad and self-destructive.

•sigh•

after the conversation my wife had with me last night.... I may have to do something... She swears i am/have add/adhd... Or im not happy

Dangit... Do i call a psychologist or psychiatrist?

For add/adhd start with your primary care provider. If you need help with mental health issues, start with a psychologist. They will be able to refer you to a psychiatrist if you need meds.

I called my dr office already... Nurse called back and doc said "call this person". That person is a psycologist. I was on the fence about doing anything. This thread pushed me to the other side.

I just found it odd that after my conversation with my wife yesterday...talked to my bro which we live with and he made some of the same observations... Then I see this thread... The world is trying to tell me something.

I have people who care about me that have spoken up... I count myself lucky.

8 out of 11...I'm doomed.

Sadly, there is that stigma concerning seeking "mental" help. It's considered a sign of weakness or some sort of inadequacy or failing. My thinking is there are some who may have a chemical imbalance in the brain and nothing will rectify it other than medication. We take high blood pressure or cholesterol meds for a chemical imbalance in our bodies so why not psychotropics.

Only problem with medication is sometimes that is the "go to" cure to fix whatever issue someone has. It only masks the symptoms but the underlying cause and problem is still there. Some people would rather go to their PCP and get a pill than deal with issues that a psychologist or mental health therapist would delve into.

I've been feeling depressed these days (more and more) but I don't need a doctor to tell me why. I've been working too many hours for too long and on nights. Been working nights since 1998, I'm about to turn 59 and can't believe how much "life" I've missed since then. The thought of getting older doesn't bother me, but the thought of getting older and not living is really bothering me. Lately I have no energy, I never feel awake and I've been sick a few times since November. I very seldom ever got sick, but it's been a LOT this year.

I'm trying to change my situation to re-join "the land of the living" but it's proving to be more difficult than I thought. Not saying it's impossible, just difficult.

I didn't even have to look at that to know I'm depressed. In 10 out of 11.

I've had suicidal thoughts recently but I'd classify them more as a thought just to occupy my mind rather than something if ever do. It's still not healthy though.

Stop narrating my thoughts ***hole.

Seriously, though, I've never been comfortable talking to people about depression. Whenever I got a touch of teenage melancholy, the respose was always so condescending and judgemental, that I really felt alone and unable to confide in others. This solitude and expectation to bottle negative feelings actually made me depressed to an extent. I still have trouble admitting when I'm upset. I try to be positive, though. I mean, here I am typing this to a bunch of strangers...

I know exactly what you mean. And sitting here typing to strangers is FAR easier than trying to talk to someone about this **** face to face. Most people just don't want to deal with it, plain and simple. Getting shut down while trying to let your feelings out to someone is very frustrating and often would upset me more than the original problem or feeling itself. So we play this game where we become cynical basstards and never really let anyone in. But it beats being a miserable sob, right?
