$1100

alright here goes:

1. doesn't really matter to me active is nice but is not a selling point
2. I'm more of a fan of the modern sound, but once again not selling point
3. as light as possible is always nice but doesn't matter
4. fingers
5. yes my starter
6. no but my first informed purchase where I know what I want and what I'm looking for

I would like: maple fretboard, under $1100 inc. taxes shipping etc., not hugely into 5 string but if it's a good deal I will go for it

Based on that, here are my suggestions. :)

Music Man StingRay single or dual H - great rock sound, aggressive - super funk tones - Louis Johnson old school sound to Flea

Music Man Sterling single or dual H - slightly lighter and smaller body, similar tones, but you have more options with changing pickups from single to series to parallel more info here: Music Man Sterling 5 bass - YouTube

Spector Euro 4LX neck thru - P/J pickups, active, punchy, great slap tone, great growly rock sound - you can get in a 35" scale, more string tension, I think - not sure though - more info FUNK BASS-Andrew Irvine Spector Euro 4LX-PJ Demo of styles, tones, and bass construction - YouTube

Spector Rebop - bolt on Euro - dual EMG HZs, slightly different sound, but punchy and modern - great tones here Autumn Leaves Solo Bass Guitar Improvisation - YouTube

Fender Jazz - my Jazz was more than 11lbs - I loved the sound, but it didn't fit with my band and my back hated the weight (it was solid swamp ash) - you can get warm passive tones and great rock tones. Slapping is awesome on this bass. Ed Friedland reviews a 50th anniversary Jazz here Fender 50th Anniversary Jazz Bass - YouTube

Tim Commerford with a Jazz (mostly) Timmy C Best Bass Riffs - YouTube

Those are my suggestions. I play Spector Rebops (4 and 5 strings). My 4 string is 7.5lbs, my 5 is almost 9lbs. I play rock, funk, pop - and I fit in with two guitarists and a keyboard player. Spector is known for punchy mids, and this works well with the songs I play in my band.

Good luck with your search, and make sure you get a bass YOU like.

live I Canada unfortunately :(

I wish I still lived in Canada! :crying:
But So. Cal. is a decent compromise...

Try out as many instruments as you can get your hands on. All the suggested instruments will work well for you.
Personally, I think you could pick up a used Fender Jazz and a Fender Precision for $1100 with some careful shopping (aim for mid 90's made in Mexico) and you'll be set for any situation for many years.

Is the loonie still worth more than the US dollar? It was a couple months back...

yes it is, and I love Canada it's just that the shipping rates up here are brutal because of duties and everything, I was and still am looking for a mia jazz or a geddy lee and I have been poking around the local music stores to check some of their most expensive and see how they compare with ones in my price range, so far I love the ray but every bass is different so I'm not sure, if I can't find a good deal on a used stingray or 44-02 I'll be going with a new jazz or carvin b40
