$1400 to spend on a loud rock rig

Well, I can't get a better recomendation than that! Thanks Greenboy, I'll give Alex a shout - having trouble sourcing an 18 sound mid over here anyway.

Jools,

Here's a rough idea of sensitivity for a fEarful 15/6 and because of similarity of components and design, a Big One. With one watt at 8 ohms you could compare either of them to a good 310 cab or some lesser 410 - with some additional extension at the low end for the 15-based enclosures.

And driven fully the 15/6 or Big One will fall in somewhere between a 610 and an 810 (depending on how you EQ), and again with more low extension.

Now that lightweight kilowatts are so cheap this makes it possible to have a relatively small and light rig that can make big SPL. If I was doing tube heads and needed big SPL though, I'd stick with the 610 or 810, or go with dual Big Ones or fEarfuls.

hmm so has anyone actually owned those Carvin full-stacks?? i really need a rock tone like the GK and Ampegs provide. i dont care if its tube or solid-state, but i really need suggestions that are for ROCK music. not soft stuff!
so has anyone tried this carvin?

if someone can't standby this product i really wouldn't consider buying it and would rather get an Ampeg/GK stack
thanks for all the input everyone!

extra note: it is rather tempting at this price range... but i really need some sound samples and input. maybe i'll grab a carvin 810 and a GK-700rb II to save a couple bucks on a cab...

The BRX 10.4 goes deep and loud and coupled with the B2000, is pushing 1300w rms. The DRIVE and SUB BASS controls get the fat’n nasty is a hurry and the clean tones are there also. Since he has 1400 bucks to spend, he’ll have two hundred left over so just spend a few bucks more for a second cab, the BRX 10.2. Now you’re ready for anything. Small gig, big gig, outdoor festival, whatever.

If you want a loud amp for cheap I will suggest a Peavey Firebass 700.

(I play in a Doom Metal / Hardcore Punk band with 2 Full stack guitarists)

My rig = Black Classic StingRay 4 --> Dan Electro Cool Cat Overdrive --> Firebass 700 --> 2 X 410 Ampeg Cabs & 2 X 118 carvin cabs.

Prices - $200 For Amp, $400 For Ampeg Cabs, $200 For Carvin Cabs, & $40 For Pedal

Just remember to watch for good deals on eBay / Craigslist & cheap head and good cab(s) is a winning combo.

does the singer(s) have their own amp? how 'bout the drummer, some sort of rig for his kick drum?

hmm. I realize I'm not sure what kind of PA support you have, but it sure is a nice thing to show up, and travel, with a coupla basses, some pedals/DI, and plug in and play. If there's any way that can be a reality for you, I would definitely go that way. I see the trend is most clubs having a decent PA, and venues aiming to lower the stage volume so as to control the mix better. IEM is also a godsend.

my .02, someone had to say it.......

Let me throw my dos centavos in here.

My setup is a Carvin LB76 6 string bass with dual humbuckers (see avatar) going into a Carvin BX1500 head and BRX 4x10 cab. There is no shortage of low end on this rig and in fact I don't have my bass control all the way up, not because the amp or cab can't handle it, but because my house can't handle it. In the 6+ months I've owned this rig I have had zero problems or issues with it, it's never farted out, and I have never said "I wish it had ..." and yes it has been gigged with.

As a side note, a friend of mine has the Line 6 head with the 12AX7 and you will have no issues keeping up with it. Actually it's the other way around.

Is this rig Gods gift to bassists? No, not if you're looking for a growly SVT sound. If you want a clean, very tight, and articulate setup that has plenty of power and a ton of features you would be hard pressed to find better in my opinion. That is why I bought it after all.

They offer two options that may be of interest here, both have the BX1500 head, but one comes with the BRX4x10 and the other comes with a BR8x10. Both packages are $1100. So whats the difference? The BRX series of cabs are their flagship cabs and are made a little nicer. Don't forget to check the frequency ranges on these cabinets. You will be surprised.

In other news...

I have to agree with the others that have posted as well. An 810 is an awesome looking cab and most sound decent, however do you really want to be moving a refrigerator around at 3am? I am thinking that a 4x10 with an additional 2x10 will sound a bit tighter and would be less likely to get flubby. The other advantage of a 4x10 + 2x10 rig would be versatility in terms of small, medium, and large gigs. If you really just gotta have an 8x10, even if its just for the visual vibe, get one and rock out man.

I hope this helps and groove on :bassist:

anyones thoughts on an GK 1001rb and a Carvin 8x10? or should still consider the BX1500?
(since i have very little knowledge about mixing amp-heads and cabs when it comes to ohms, and etc)

I play a 1001RB-II through a mid-80's SVT 810 and it sounds great.

I played the same head through a Carvin 810 in a rehearsal space once and I thought it sounded pretty bad. Sterile, flat, and not as loud as my Ampeg. Very underwhelming.

For what you're doing, and your price range, I don't think you can go wrong with the 1001RB-II/used SVT 810 combination you mentioned earlier.

thanks for the replies guys! i was deeply interested in the peavey mainly for the tone, durability and also it being lighter than a lot of 810s (111lbs)
i would like to try out that carvin though...

The Carvin 810 Neo cab only weighs in at 102 and sound much better than their older BR series cab. It has better high end clarity.

For Carvin, I would go for the B2000, as I like the simplicity.

Good luck in your journey!

EDIT: Here is the link to Carvins brand new 810 NEO cab! : Invalid Link Removed

Not too many people know about this yet as it was just released last week!!

Otherwise, this one would be a wise choice if you don't mind a little more weight, though still 30 pounds lighter than an SVT 810:

Watch the video!

I can attest to the Hartke 810 having a LOT of bottom end and due to their speaker design, you won't have any problems with getting high end clarity either!

ah is the BR810 really THAT bad?? i was really hoping to get a cheap 810... i have a Hartke VXL attack bass pedal. maybe that can reduce its sterileness... and how bout the BXL1500 and BR810 combo? will that sound good at all?

i saw it for only 1100 bucks

If you really want the BR810 for cheap, here you go!

http://used.guitarcenter.com/usedGear/index.cfm

After arriving at this site... enter in the upper right field "Carvin" (without the quotes) and select AMPS from the drop down and click on SEARCH. Then page down and if you don't see it on the first page, click on the next page in line and you should see it. You can get the Carvin BR810 there for only $360! then you can get a decent amp to sit atop your 810.

Once you find it, you can call that GC store and make arrangements to have it shipped to you. I know if you deal with them, they will throw in the shipping cost for free. It has been at that store for some time and you may want to mention this fact to the rep at GC so he knows you know it's been there for a while. you will get a better deal!

thanks for the link, but im going to have to wait til late november before choosing something :(
but is the BR810 really not good at all overall? if not, i'll probably have to go with finding a used stack...

Well, the Carvin didn't work for me at all. That doesn't mean it's "bad overall" or wouldn't work for you -- you might love it. Personally, I'd take a used SVT over a new or used Carvin 10 times out of 10, and I definitely play loud rock.

With $1400 to spend, and the fact you can get a used SVT in the $500-$600 range, you'd still be left with a pretty nice chunk to use on an amp. And if you were to decide that the Ampeg didn't work for you, I don't think you'd have to worry about being able to sell it for what you paid for it, easily.

so my guitarist acquired a Line 6 Full Stack recently and my band intends on booking many shows locally very soon and i'm going to be in the market for a new amp in late november.
so far i basically settled in hopes to buy an 810 with a loud enough head to power it. (will i need any special equiptment to power it though?)
so my budget is around $1400 and not a penny more.

so what is a good combination? i was thinking about the Peavey VB-810 and a GK 700rb 2, but im still open to many suggestions

note: i play hard rock, punk and funk.
but i mainly play hard hitting loud rock.

Trying to keep up with stupid-loud guitarist(s) is a fool's game. I'd highly suggest using the DI on your amp which you may already have, or picking up a DI box so you can get the sound of your bass in the monitors as well as the mains, and see how long said guitarist carries around full stack of gear. Use the sonic resources at your disposal, if you have them, aka, PA support.

we don't own a PA just yet. my current "rig" is a Peavey TNT150 combo. its decent but certainly not loud enough anymore with my guitarists new rig. also my other guitarist is grabbing a marshal half-stack. so i'm going to be out blasted. our drummer has an improvised drum mic set using a cheap PA (only 4 inputs) so I really need a powerful rig.

I'm gonna try to find an Ampeg 810 in late november but if i cant find during that time, i'll just grab the Carvin BX1500 and BR810 rig for $1100.
