$1400 to spend on a loud rock rig

Not true. An 8x10 is way, way easier to move than two 4x10s. I have two 4x10s. If I had it to do over again, I would DEFINITELY go with an 8x10/4x12.

As for what I would recommend, find an 8x10 that you like, preferably used. Then buy a Peavey IPR1600 and a preamp. In fact, most pedal-style pres will run the IPRs. I can run mine off of both my Tech21 Bass VT and my MXR M-80. The M-80 actually sounds REALLY good through my IPR1600/Tech21 B410 setup.

From there, bridge the IPR1600 (you'll need to build a special Y cable for it, but it's safe; just make sure you look up the proper configuration for it) and voila! You'll have an easy to move rig for well under your $1400 mark.

This took me back to when I was a frontman. I insisted on always using my own PA. It was two speakers, two floor wedges, a board, and two old Crown anvils. It made my car scrape the ground but I hauled it all around and I didn't think anything of it. Now, less than 20 years later, I'm all proud of myself because I put together a head/cab combination that weighs 20 pounds. I'm still in great shape, but now I have to add, for my age.

Like you said, it happens to everybody. Anyways, thanks for reminding me that I am going to die soon.

Is this some of the best advice that has ever been shared on TB!

I was gonna come out and recommend the 4X10+4X10 stack, but what The Bomb is saying is so perfect. The only reservation I'd have about the 8X10 is it might not be as loud as a couple of the new 4X10's, but there's also the thing that you'll have to buy used, if you want quality and price, which would limit you to older Edens, SWR's and a few others.

Go for the fridge! :D

I have the same need for a loud rock rig to cope with a loud drummer and two guitarists with half stacks.

Already got a Bass Pod Pro
Got an 800 watt bridged into 8 ohm power amp
Choosing right now whether to build a fEarful 15/6 or buy a Barefaced Big One (very similar to the FEarful but I don't have to build it - just hand over another couple of hundred)

I reckon that'll give me as nearly as much firepower (if not more) than a fridge and only weigh 50 pounds

In the UK I myself would be a buyer of The Big One unless I felt like spending time on a build. And go for as much wattage as Alex recommends. That's gonna be more broadband SPL per pound than you'll ever find in any other direct radiator design.

Well, I can't get a better recomendation than that! Thanks Greenboy, I'll give Alex a shout - having trouble sourcing an 18 sound mid over here anyway.

If you can get the GK head for under $600-650 (I have no idea), I'd go for a used Berg NV610 as your cab instead. Much easier to move, sounds better and it's nearly as loud.

hmm so has anyone actually owned those Carvin full-stacks?? i really need a rock tone like the GK and Ampegs provide. i dont care if its tube or solid-state, but i really need suggestions that are for ROCK music. not soft stuff!
so has anyone tried this carvin?

extra note: it is rather tempting at this price range... but i really need some sound samples and input. maybe i'll grab a carvin 810 and a GK-700rb II to save a couple bucks on a cab...

I've said it before in different threads and I'll say it again:

I couldn't be happier with my GK 800RB + VT Bass pedal and Ampeg 8x10 cab. It is the sound I've been after since I started playing almost ten years ago. And it's one of the loudest setups I've ever heard. Way louder than my MTI SVT head through the same cab. Both guitarists in my band tend to play very loud through high wattage tube amps, not to mention the fact that our drummer is a monster, and I have no problem keeping up live with no P.A. support whatsoever. Way more than enough power available.

The entire thing cost me a total of app. $1,000. $600 of that was the cab alone. As you've discovered, they go for much less than that nowadays on Craigslist, etc.
