18" cabinets

well, I may be in a minority here, but with proper EQ and use of a crossover, and 18" can be a really useful cab. I have done more than a few gigs with one as my only cab. I used an SWR Big Ben for years and graduated to AccuGroove's Whappo Grande as my sub. it's a tight, clean sounding cab that could almost be used as a stand-alone!

Is the EV in a TL808? cab, it has the removable port cover for changing freq response. Very thouderouse witha V4B.

well, I'm new to the world of basses, so don't have huge experience of different cab set ups. 
But here's what I've found: Recently I got hold of an old Trace Elliot AH350X and matching 1818X cabinet. This has a 10" and an 18" in it. Unfortunately someone has rewired the inputs as a full pass XLR in only, so can't make use of the Bi amp mode. 
So I used it full pass anyway to see what happened. What I found was the 18" was very flappy, and I had to keep knocking the bass out with the EQ to avoid horrible rumblings. Presumably this would be better if it was all wired properly and Bi amped? 
so for the last two gigs I've used a friend's Ashdown Evo 500 combo (15") with the 2x10s + horn extension cab. Sounded much clearer and more powerful (suppose it would being 150W higher rating 
), but still had loads of thump. Bearing in mind I play a 5 string this is what I was aiming for with the 18... not sure I got any less using the Ashdown 15...

I've tried biamping vs. full range many times and always have preferred the sound of full range, even with an 18".
I stack my ampeg 118 with a 410 and it gives me a great range - punchy mids and earth-rattling lows. Playing live, they don't matter much, since I DI into the PA which almost always have 18s.
ampeg should make a high wattage 2x18 that would stack nicely under an 8x10...i would be all over that

I'm sure at least some of you remember Cerwin-Vega cabinets. Yeah, I'm a dinosaur! LOL! These were really the first folded horns other than the Acoustic cabinets in the 360, and 370 models available to bassists. Yes, Sunn fh cabs were available then, too. I have 2 B-36 mf cabinets. These addressed the near field audibility problems with folded horn 18 cabinets by installing a 12" driver in its own cabinet integrated into the larger one. These also had a much wider frequency range than just an 18. These were 'j' boxes as some call them. They also made a 'w' box, the B-48 and B-48 mf. My '36's are incredible sounding cabinets. There isn't a cabinet made today in my opinion, that has the brutish ballsy sound these make. I had to use an SWR Bigben, and a Triad cabinet on top, powered by an SM 900. This was in a show band at The Tropicana Atlantic City in 2004. I had one of my B-36's shipped there and planned to use it. There was a problem with a loose panel, and we opted for the SWR cabs. A head-to-head comparison (same amp power) of the two setups- even with the vibrating panel in the Vega, it killed the rig with those TWO SWR cabinets! The Vega smoked it. I have back issues, and now have a wonderful Avatar B-410 neo cabinet. I STILL use the Vegas for the outdoor gigs where I really want to be heard. Hard to find these nowadays, search Ebay... they are much better, faster cabs than the Traynor, Marshall, and other deeper boxes of the era imho. When you hear what 40 hz sounds like through an 18, you'll be convinced.
So many people seem to think that all 18"s are built to the same spec, they aren't, down the years I've used various 18s going back to 1963, everyone was different; the last one was a Fane Neo 18" about 5 years ago.
I have a Peavey 1820, if that counts (2 10s and an 18). I find it provides the earthshaking lows for dub and reggae, but thats about it. The 18" black widow is original, almost 15 years old now.
Did Ampeg ever make an 18" before? It's been years ago, like 30 plus years, but I had an Ampeg and could have swore it had an 18. Maybe not, like I said, it was a long time ago.
As recently as last year I had an Ampeg rig with an SVT18 on the bottom. It was HUGE sounding. If you want to shake your audiences inards, nothing else will do. Of course, I don't have it any more, but that's another story...
I don't even know what model the Ampeg was. It had some power, but I don't know what size it was as far as watts/RMS.
I'm currently using an EV 18" under my SVT 4x10 cab and CL head. It's a bit much for a live setting, but in the rehearsal room it sounds great! I'm procuring a 810e for live use, because as it was stated earlier, the 18 will just throw bass across the room and PO the soundguy.

I have a Sonic 118TL with an EV 18B and it totally rocks, quick and deep!. I bought an Eden 18xlt so it would match the other 4-10, but is sounded inferior to the Sonic- big time.
