I know all of 3 words in Chinese:
Ni hau
Cheche
and Chui
okay, so the spelling might make it confusing, but mandarin speakers should understand.

I don't know how to read or write, obviously.
So, to all mandarin speaking people:
Ni hau!

FYI:

Ni hao -- 你好 -- hello
Xie xie -- 谢谢 -- thanks

Not sure what "chui" is, though, sorry.

Ack! See what I mean.

On "normal" keyboards, you type in the romanization (in Chinese we call it Pinyin), and then it gives you a drop-down list of the different characters, and you can choose which one you mean. In Windows, I find that it "learns" which ones you use the most often and puts those at top, so you can write pretty fast. Also sometimes the characters are attached to numbers on the list, so you can just press the corresponding number.

Ah, ok.

我也要一个用汉字的名字 ;) ,我以为不行。看来变了。我的中文名字叫丹奇。

I've been told it's water, then again, the spelling (which in turn comes from my interpretation, or perhaps misinterpretation of what I heard) might be confusing. Maybe I'm totally off also.

OK. I'm up in Beijing in my first semester of studies, and this guy's Chinese is a littlbe bit too slangy for me (or if it isn't slang, I'm worried about his meds).

Anyway, his name is 'The 2nd Hurricane'

The first greeting is 'English not good' ... presumably his

and the thread ... well, this is a bit puzzling, but I gather it means 'it's difficult at the start, so please everyone, cut me some slack'

... also, there is no reason to apologize for living in China for 'X' years and not learning Chinese. It is a seriously difficult language to learn (a lot of memorization, though the grammar is not bad).

Despite the numerous stories of someone's friend who visited China (or name your country) and returned quoting classical poetry  , it just doesn't happen that way. And the perception that if you live in a foreign country for 'X' amount of time, you will automatically pick up the language is also silly :eyebrow: . You don't learn the language without work.

Now I've heard that if you buy enough expensive basses, you will be able ... in 'X' months ... to be able to play like Jaco :bassist:

Is this true? :D
