When was the last time you saw someone play a slab body 50's P-bass in public?
Well.....They are rather rare.
As a proud owner of a few vintage Fenders:'61 all-original J-Bass(Got it in a trade in '88,I traded a de-fretted Fender Bullet Bass!!)'71,'75 Jazzes(w/Badasses-not me!).
And,yes.I PLAY THE HELL OUT OF THEM!Even though I've restricted the '61 to studio-use and"nicer, more civil"gigs(too many redneck drunks fighting in the bars around here).
In the years that I've had the '61,the finish has worn considerably. The nitro was sprayed really, really thin.
So,IMHO,I really don't think the bass in the OP was"mistreated",for the most part.Sure,he/she(the original owner) probably was not polishing it/wiping it down feverishly after every single jam on it(I HATE those kinda people!).
I just like the fact that if they could talk, those old,"well-played"relics(not THOSE relics, the REAL ones!),could really tell some stories.
As for the "sun-bleached",mistreated finish on that '53??As for myself,I like it when I wake up in the morning and the sun is shining thru my blinds on my bass(es),sitting on their stands.I just sit there, with a cup of coffee and a cigarette,no TV,just silence, and look at MY basses.
And,count my blessings that I have some pretty darn significant pieces of history sitting in my den.
PEACE,
Steve
