Agree with some I've read. '61 for this track, for the punch and articulation. Love to hear the '62 on a rootsy soul track though. Nice playing!

I suppose I'll finally have to check out Pino systematically to see what the hullabaloo is about, those were really great lines. I tried listening to Voodoo but it's not my style, I was annoyed by the indiscernible vocals and I spaced out. With John Mayer you can really hear what Pino is doing.

I'm going to go with most of the tone difference is in the choice of strings. Both sound great, but I prefer how the Fender flats sit in the mix for this song.

I'm with the chorus who preferred the '61 and Fender Flats - perhaps the higher tension of the strings just gave the notes what I perceived as more immediacy and "pop".

Something I've really been trying to zero-in on lately is matching components to create a cohesive whole. Therefore, my approach would be to put the easier-playing strings on the bass that fights you more, and the stiffer strings on the easier-playing bass.

So I'd be curious to swap the strings and repeat the test - see if the strings or the bass itself made the bigger difference.

I actually like the ‘62 better, it sits better in the mix and doesn’t jump out. The TI’s have a more complex tone as well. ‘61 is louder but doesn’t mean that louder is better. Both instruments sound great.

The '62 had more of a low mid/mid range hump to it to my lousy ears, which helped it push through a bit and seem louder. Not to knock either, but the 62 was my favorite by a league. Both sounded excellent though, makes me feel like switching off the thunderbirds and using the P-bass again for a bit.

I like both Basses but I prefer the sound of the 61. The playing flows better and the notes have a tad more sustain. The 62 sounds choked and hollow. I'm sure it's the strings. Would be interesting to compare both with the strings swapped around.

First off, killer playing, as usual.

I'd say although I think the '61 sounded more "wow that's amazing bass tone", the '62 fit the song better. If I was picking from a production perspective, the '62's slightly more growly and grindy tone made the bassline sound a little more "exciting" for this track.

If you were playing something more R&B or a slower, funkier groove, that '61's thicccness would probably be close to "ultimate bass tone".

Okay got home and took another listen with headphones so I could actually hear your playing. First, really nice playing both times. As for my sound preference, I preferred the Fender Flats over the TI flats in this sample. The Fenders were more percussive and the notes clearer, while the TIs almost sound like there is a little overdrive happening. Beautiful instruments and great tones, both of them, however. Thanks for sharing!

I obviously meant no insult. I listened on my phone and, not knowing the song, I couldn't tell if the original bass part was there or not, I assumed he was playing a cover.

I'll echo the others remarks on your playing - quite well played with both great technique and emotion. I liked both tracks, the flats on the 1st track were a little more clearer and more distinct to my ears. Having said that the 2nd track had more bottom to it with being muddy and I think the Thomas' might sit better in the mix.

Excellent touch on both renditions! It is hard to adjust for the different strings, but I prefer the 62 with the Thomastiks. More character of the bass came through. The 61 sounds more generic to me.

Recording/Mixing Engineer Switch: "ON".

I don't care. Your gear is good either way. I have a slight preference for #1 bass & strings. They attack a bit better and are a bit more articulate. If #2 had any slight deficiencies for this particular song, I might make it work by tweaking the EQ the slightest bit.

Here's what makes me happy and the music good: My listening to you! You're very smooth, expressive and spot-on! The musicality is most important and it's there. You're very efficient with your motion and your technique. That's what I would be listening for. The song just "hits me right."
