To answer a few questions, the fender strings ask for deeper digging in. The Thomastiks are a lighter gauge and sound less brutal.
Less high mids in those, from about 500 to 800hZ I guess.
So that’s why the 61 cuts through more.
I had rounds for a week or so on the 61, but on these basses I like flats better. Perhaps on a maple board rounds work nice, to me that is.
The 62 has a flatter neck which plays a tad easier.
That too is a reason to dig in more with the 61.

"Deeper digging in" on the '61 with Fender strings could easily account for the difference I heard. I say keep up the deeper digging in.

Well actually I'm in Detroit today. Both tracks are quite good. The 1st has more pleasing bounce to the the booty. The bass in the 2nd track has more punch and is a bit more pronounced. The playing has a wonderful flow in both. I prefer the 1st track with the 61.
If this was back in the day I think you might have one of the seats in a particular Blue & White house here on Grand Boulevard.

I like them both! I personally think you sounded better than John Mayers guitar work. And that is saying a lot !!

No doubt for me. The 62 because I can hear the notes better with its more pleasing tone.
Loved both. Truly. Hard to say, but I'm one of the couple of oddballs that preferred the '62.

Regarding strings: I recently bought a fender mustang JMJ and also ordered some TI flats to replace the fender strings it came with, but... I'm actually loving the fender strings so I might just use them until they wear out (which might never happen).
While I love TI flats, I'll vote for your first bass in this race. Rock on!

I vote '61 too. GREAT tone on both - that's what a bass guitar should sound like IMO. And wow you are a terrific player.
I agree the '62 seemed a little "fuller" or slightly beefier, but to me it wasn't as loud/present/impactful as the '61. I won't say the '61 "cut through" better because to me that implies more mids or highs...your tone is perfect as is on both basses IMO. Thank for posting this.
