1962 J-Bass problem

there was no consistent standard from what ive seen even if re-winders will tell you otherwise. my slab 62 has its original windings on the bridge pickup and reads out at mid 8k. i cant remember off hand but its around 8.4-8.6k i believe depending on the temp. the neck pickup had had a terrible repair done to it and was covered in coil tape and looked like it had been rewound so i sent it to duncan for a rewind. i had them rewind it to match the bridge. i asked for 8.4k and they nailed it. that rewound pickup sounds just like the original. no current available boutique pickup sounds like it. the 60-62 pickups ive seen on ebay or basses which have had the pickup readings shown all seem to have similar dcr readings. i have seen high 7k as well. it seemed like as the mid 60's came on the pickups started reading out at high 6k and low 7k.

mind you, theres the possibility that the solder just needs to be reflowed at the eyelets. my 64 p bass pickup died last year. the treble coil read out at 6k but the bass coil was showing dead. i sent it in to duncan and they were able to repair it without a rewind.

if theres inner pole corrosion like i had on a set of 74 pickups i had, theyll need a rewind. duncan rewound a set for me and they always end up coming out sounding just like stock old pickups.

From the original Fender pickup matrix chart as reprinted in the book, The Fender Bass, by Klaus Blasquiz, page 44: 7.5 kohms. Of course, with manufacturing tolerances, it could be a tad or so more or less.

heres some clips of the 62 i recorded for another pickup maker.

theres clips of both pickups solod and then both dimed. you can hear that even after the duncan rewind, the neck pickup still has the same character in regards to frequency response as the bridge pickup. before going with the rewind i tried lollar, duncan antiquity 1 and 2, and nordstrand neck pickups in the bass. they all sounded really good but they were all different from the old pickup. all of the replacements had more strident sounding upper mids and low treble. they werent as clean and smooth up top.
