1963 Precision Bass

So I had a customer bring this in to work the other day. I never figured I'd even see something like this in person, much less actually play one, much less play it.

But here you are, in all it's roadworn glory, a 1963 Fender Precision Bass. Terrible pictures are my bad, I'll see if I can't get some more later.

Now, I don't normally subscribe to the school of though that insinuates that older guitars are just better by default, but this was the nicest playing bass I've ever touched. Sounded incredible, just butter.

Nice! I took my '64 P-bass to rehearsal tonight and my drummer brought his dad's '68 P-bass. Good stuff! Love both of them.

There is magic in those old Fenders. Played a 65 Jazz this last weekend. It felt and played great. Fender re-issue basses don't come close.

I've always been a jazz bass lover, I was at a guys' house a few years ago buying a cassette deck and he was pretty rich, he had an early 60's jazz and P bass, he let me play them, I wasn't thrilled with the jazz, I was expecting to be blown away, I played the precision, I've never liked precisions....I was blown away, I immediately asked him to buy it and he would not sell. It is the kind of bass that if I recorded an album I would ask him to borrow it or rent it or something. It was that good.

This bass is the story.
I had the same year & color when I was 20.
Traded it for a Pedulla 5-string fretless.
Still cry when I think about it.
Look at the color of that fingerboard, real deal brazilian rosewood. You don't see wood like that any more.

The first picture was taken when I first opened the case. The second was after I pulled the pickguard to check the pickups and electronics. I just hadn't put it back on yet.

I'd say it would sound even better if the pups had a cushion or springs under them to bring them up to a more desirable height.
