My first Rick, which I got while in high school, was the one in my avatar. I finally sold it after 38 years of being it's caretaker. The new caretaker is having it totally restored and will look fabulous once done (the bass, not him; I don't know what he looks like, anyway).

...Jeff , was that your double bound black 4005 ?
Unfortunately (in my opinion) way too many Rickenbackers were traded or modded because of that little .0047 cap...people were switching out the pups ...Like mine, (which someone had enlarged the pickup routs to add a couple of Bill Lawrence pups to probably try and improve the plink - plunk sound of the bass and make it bigger/boomier like a Gibson or Fender.)Here's the '67 (GE2415) that used to be mine... It's the coolest looking bass I've ever owned, but I had no use for the tone.

Back in da day, hardley anyone (including guitar techs/luthiers) knew that all you had to do was bypass or remove the .0047 cap to get a really nice..real-world bass sound out of your rick! With the caps removed or bypassed, both of my Ricks can hold their own against my Fenders, Gibsons, Reverend ect.....obviously, this is only MY opinion and I know that others love em the way they came from the factory...but try the bypass.![]()
I still play a Ric and have owned many--have an '89 4001v63 that I will never sell--and would love to have a 4005 again...but cap or no cap, the tone was not happenin' in my 4005.
Man I was born in 1966 and I wish I was worth $8500 lol Anyway to tell what day? Sweet bass!!
Are you in "mint" condition?
