Ok, so I need help on 1 more thing. The original Gibson case I got with the bass is in horrible shape. It seems like the latches will give out at any moment :/ So I'd hate to be walking and have the bass just fall out of the case. I've been to several website and can't seem to find a case that fits this bass. It's 48' in height and all cases I have found are 47' or smaller. Help anyone?

Excuse my two cents, because it's not what you want to hear, but how would you like to have been treated if you were that lady? Until we can genuinely treat others as we would honestly wish to be treated, we deserve our own screwing. If you don't mind screwing, I have to think you like being screwed. Probably a good Christian, too...
I'd have the case repaired if possible.
With respect to the body restoration:
You might be able to remove that glued on stuff with some heat. You'd need to be careful not to damage the finish, but I believe that would work.
Meguiar's Scratch X 2.0 is terrific stuff which will take care of heavy scratches and such. And Zymol cleaner wax is one of the best products around to bring out the beauty in the finish. I've used both products and can't say enough about how well they work. I used in in my '78 Gibson RD Artist and it looks so much better.
The RD really stands out in the crowd and sounds/plays amazing. It's one of my all time favorites. Truly one of Gibson's least appreciated basses. They were light years ahead of their day and remain a terrific instrument.
I can get mine to sound like a Rickenbacker on steroids!!
It's a little heavy, but who cares. And it balances like no other!!
They're iconic in every way.
I want to own all four finishes some day.

You have a great collection of basses!!! I'm no bass guitar expert but I know this RD Artist has some of the best tone that I've heard come out of a bass guitar. My 3 brothers are very picky about the bass guitars that I've played and by far love this one the best!!!
As far as the finish. I already tried to removed the HEAVY glue with some heat and the stuff wouldn't give for anything. So I went to the location hardware store and they recommended to products, none of them damaged the actual finish. So long story short, I ended up having the use a wood scrapper to get that junk off. Then got some steel wool and worked at it. It's no longer in perfect condition by any means
but I took it to several shops in Austin & Houston and everyone loved it still. haha i'm sure plenty of people on here would think other wise but oh well.Maybe if she told me that bass meant a lot to her then it would be different. But when someone says, " I want $195 but I'm willing to negotiate" then I think it's fair game. On top of that she was talking about how it had just been sitting in her house for 7 years taking up space in her closet and wanted more room for shoes and clothes then I really don't feel bad. ALSO, at that exact moment I figured the bass was worth money but didn't know how much especially since it had all that stuff glued all over it. For example, one time I owned a 4-string Warwick Thumb bass (through the neck model). The bass fell off of my stand and cracked the neck. Immediately I figured it's not worth near as much because of the damage. So I sold the bass for $950. haha well I found out the guy I sold it to took the bass to a shop, discovered the the crack was only on the surface, had the neck repaired and refinished, then sold the bass for $3000. It's life, it happens, I didn't know any better and I still don't know a lot about stuff like a lot of guys on here. SO AT THE TIME I was thinking with the rust on the knobs, bass not working, and bedazzle glued all over the body that I could never get what a good one would be worth . . . I don't feel bad.

So I think I struck GOLD todayI bought a Gibson RD Artist Bass from an older lady that was trying to create more closet space for $150. From the serial number it appears to be a 1972 model but I can't tell for sure. The SN # starts with 72 so I figure it is a 1972 but I could be wrong. Can anyone help me out with this??
** Story continued . . . she told me she wants $185 for the bass but is willing to drop the price. So I figure offer her $150. She just knew it was a Gibson bass but nothing about the model, year, or type. Here are pics finally. I am planning on having the body sanded down and refinished because of the stuff glued on the body. Any suggestions to get that junk off the bass?

I would have told her the approximate value range of the bass. I would have treated her as I would like to be treated, which doesn't include taking advantage of her for money. I would have told her my honest opinion. There is nothing that I know of worth screwing somebody for. Money isn't important, people are. My integrity means more to me than any advantage I could get by using someone's ignorance against them. Until we all think like this, we will continue to have petty wars and disagreements. Somebody has too start the ball rolling. Jesus tried to, Confucious tried to, Buddha tried to, and many other truly holy people. I'm not mad because I didn't buy it, but given the opportunity, I would have BOUGHT it from her, not stolen it. I don't believe for a minute that the original poster didn't research it and take advantage of her. He even says that it was offered at a$185 (a steal at that) and that he was going to get it for $150. So he didn't buy it blindly, as he wants us to believe. He can justify as he wishes, and he is no different than most people, but he fails the test of treating others as he wishes to be treated. Let's make the world better, and genuinely TREAT OTHERS LIKE WE WISH TO BE TREATED.
Any reply to this post should include an example of how you would like to be treated had you been the seller.

I think uglyrumor is more right than wrong on this. I would have told Grandma that the bass she has is probably worth up to a couple of grand and that due to my poverty strickeness I can only offer $500... let her make the choice. She'd probably sell for 500...

I certainly wouldn't have ground her down any further. But you have your karma, I have mine and brother, it does come back on you eventually.

You owe no one an explanation.
You got the bass and obviously it was meant for you to get it. And the person you got it from may very well have known what she could have got for it and chose to sell it to you for the price she did.
Like you said she was trying to make closet space.

I see nothing wrong in that deal. Buyer buys an item he wants to use, seller sells item to get rid of it and will be happy to have more space in the closet. If money didn't matter, who's to say that it DID matter to the lady selling the bass?

I dont see anything wrong with that deal eather. I bet if she had taken it to guitar center they would have offered her even less for that bass... so lets see some pics of it with out the beads or whatever it was glued to it...

That's one of the basses I really want. I'm super jealous. And it's an RD artist, with the moog electronics in it. I feel like all the old ladies in my area are savvy. Maybe I'll get the steal someday.
