all i have to say is, GET IT! if the neck is straight and trussrod is working, go for it. i paid 970 dollar for my mid 70's, and there was few parts original on it.


(i overpaid i know) though i have about graded it back to original, and i still havent paid 1600, as i see the beaten but all original ones go for.

The bass does not have holes for mounting the metal pup cover. I am wondering if the pick guard is not original to the bass. Would Fender have released the bass without metal cover in 76 or did they all have this. All the 76s I've seen have these holes or the cover. The bridge cover is missing too but the holes in the body are there. The thumb rest is also missing but the guard has holes for it.

I called Fender and it is a 76. I asked them about the holes for the pup cover and they said the cover was included but not mounted to the bass. This doesn't sound right to me. Maybe he just misunderstood me but I'm not ruling anything out I guess. Anyone know?

That is odd. The holes in the pickguard should be there. It may be non-original pickguard, but it's odd that it would then have holes for the thumbrest. My 77' had the holes for both the bridge, PUP cover and thumb rest. I would take off the pickguard to see if there are starter holes around the PUP cover to start. You may just have a non-original pickguard?

$400-500 seems quite low...especially for a '76....I'd proceed with caution....and figure either

A) the guy your dealing with doesn't know what he has or how much it should be worth or
B) you're getting scammed...

If it's the real deal and all is well with it, smoking deal. you can't even touch a used brand new US P for that price......I've seen mid 80s Ps selling for twice, sometimes tripple, that price

Can't post any pics until this evening. They're coming, I promise.

In other 1976 p-bass news, I think the bridge is not original also. When I post the pictures you'll see why. It only has two saddles instead of four. This sucks. I wish it was all original. How will this rogue bridge effect the value?

^ Actualy, not true, mine neck is stamped to be a 77 (ah, but you see, there is no serial on the headstock) but the serial on the neckplate claims its a 75, but as i have heard, Fender was very "reach in and grab" in these days, so you got alot of spree on the "transitional"(sp?) models from 76.. (and in my case, 77..)

Any how, i have fixed up my bass, price list:
74 pickguard: 105 Dollar
72 Tuners: 105 Dollar
NOS tuner bushings: around 20 i think it was.
74 Wiring Harness: 117 dollars (im still not sure if im gonna butcher that poor mustang control board..)
?? pickup: havent bought yet, but i expect that it will run me around 100 - 150 dollar.

as im Norwegian, this aint actualy as much for me as it might seem, we have a slightly stronger currency ;)

There is some slight stuff that anoys me on mine i cant get away though, wich gonna cost me abit in the future, but im not bothered with that now.

its in for a check up and a fix up, so there goes 100 - 150 more!

for me the bridge was the only thing exept for the neck and body(im though a little skeptical to the body, as its marked with "RI" writen with a marker in the neck pocket)

well, tell us what you think of it so far? it seems solid? if i where you, i would take of the neck nd check the neck stamp, that will be the most accurate to give it an exact date its from.

(BTW, the Fender forum sucks! :( i dont have a "real" email adress....)
