That would devalue the instrument for me. A C neck would increase the value instead.
Stories like this make me call BS. Glad you like your new bass but adding how it was acquired seems made up for attention on the internet.
S8 serial number can be anything from 1978-1982. Check the neck butt date and heel for dates or codes.
Also there is a sticker at the pickguard (can be seen at the pick you posted with date on it).
Pots codes can also be used for dating the S series as pickup back side codes.

Believe what you want I have no reason to lie. Anyone saying this just sounds jealous to me.
Why would anyone crave attention so much to make up a story like this just for internet attention?
I got lucky one day back in ‘08 and saw an early morning listing on CL for a 74 Jazz. $700 and 100 miles away from me. I was first in line I guess and they held it for me until I could get off work and meet them that afternoon. I posted about it because I thought it was a cool story and in the days of eBay and now Reverb, deals like these never happen. I didn’t post it for any attention or glory, nor did I receive any.
I like hearing these stories because for every $3500 78 P listed on Reverb, there’s still a slight chance you can get one and enjoy it for a more realistic cost.

Since it's probably worth at least 2,500, I would have offered a lot more than $100.
Realistic? Sad how many people think it's ok to rip someone off, and even applaud it. I guess I'm just old fashioned.
Looks like a legit transaction, sometimes many (who'd likely react similarly) are just bummed they haven't won the bass or even a 'good-fortune' lottery, just once.
Many more of us don't get that kinda lucky or, it comes to us in another way.
It's about recognizing & seizing an opportunity.
I have a 1978 Precision that I bought used in 1990 for $450 with orig tweed case. (faded yellow now) white with black PG, maple FB and covers. Heavy, but the rock of Gibralter. Once setup, as stable as I have ever seen. Sounds great. Authorative, and responds to my touch the way I like it. Good luck with yours!!!

I dent think anyone doubts your part of the story its just your friends story that makes zero sense.
