1982 Fender P bass special-walnut

Update on the bass... The guy contacted me a couple of days ago. I told him I would go yesterday and see it. Turns out he pawned it. We went to the pawn shop and the guy knew the manager so he let me play it.
First off, it's a beautiful bass. It just has that classic look. The tuners are like butter. The neck is ridiculousl! Thin and super fast. The bridge is excellent. It's a 5 digit serial number starting with 156. It's in very good shape. It's also a bit heavy.
There are some things I'm concerned about, though. The active doesn't work, but I think its just a matter of adding the black connector where you put the 9 volt. The E and A string kept slipping from the nut, but I think the strings were not wound properly. The nut did not look damaged. The strings were worthless and all they had were small amps. I wasn't digging the sound of it, but it could have been the strings. The action was a bit high, but I'm sure that could be adjusted.
The guy settled on a price a bit lower than the 1100 he was asking.
I wish I could have spent a couple of hours with a good amp and some good strings. I told him I would think about it. I'm not sure what to do. Any advice?

This might be a dumb question but are those things really made of walnut or is it ash/maple with walnut stain? Never heard of a walnut neck before but I guess it would work.
I just don't get that whole story. Why would you sell a bass on eBay, then refuse the $1100 (actually it was a little over that) and go pawn it for less money? Doesn't make sense.
I have a couple of guesses that are on the shady side. Or he just needs the money now. But if the bass is worth twice that much, I'm sure he could have sold it anywhere.

My wife seems to wholeheartedly disagree with that statement...
Was there a CD prefix ahead of the numbers...?.. There are 5 digits though....I'd be very concerned about the state of that preamp...its a limited run pre, just like the rest ofthe bass....I'd think that if it was absent and you'd have to replace it, that would devalue the bass quite a bit....The tuners can be replaced if they really are the culprit with the tuning issue....try to find a decent portable head that you can bringnto the store and plug it some headphones and see what you have before giving up any cash
Cool...sounds like it could be the last part of the run...maybe you could take strings off a current bass qmd do a test with those...?...it sounds like its worth buying,vbut until you know what you have in the preamp and pickup output, its kinda hard to say what its worth...
I am concerned about the preamp. I did take out the wires from the back and I put them together and you could hear they were live, as it made a humming sound on the amp. But it really doesn't mean anything, I guess.
Well, it seems that there's some hope...if they're trying to sell it to you as is, its a dice roll, but it could pay off...
Sounds like the bass's issues don't have to be deal breakers. Maybe a new nut, strings, a set-up and some electronic work (or just go passive). If it was fully functioning, it sounds like you would have to pay twice the asking price. If it is structurally sound (check the truss rod and frets), it would be a pretty cool project to get it back to gigging shape. How much do you want a walnut P?
Back in the '90s, I found a Les Paul Custom at a pawnshop in Fayetteville, NC. It had some issues and I got a decent deal on it. After a little TLC, I was able to gig it--and still don't plan to let it go (I just did the math and realized I've had it almost 20 years--geesh). Good luck!

Actually, that would be the IDEAL scenario for me... to find an 80's Walnut P with non-functional (or even missing) electronics. I'd go get a set of 62CS Precision pickups and a couple of good pots and play the heck outa that thing.
