1996 Made in Japan Fender Precision - Pickguard

I have a wonderful 1996 MIJ Standard Precision bass but I’m struggling determining how to get an appropriately fitted pickguard for it. Can anyone shed some light on what to look for ?

Count the holes on the guard. Most p guards are pretty universal especially in the Fender family. Does your truss rod adjustment occur at the base of the neck or the headstock? Some guards have a notch out for the truss rod adjustment.

You COULD do a tracing and send that to WD and have them make you one that fits.

I have a MIJ Precision from around that period (97 IIRC), and I do not think the hole pattern is exactly standard Fender. I sent my existing PG in as a template and got a custom made replacement. The company I dealt with seems to have gone out of favor/had issues in the past so no particular recommendation from me on who to do the job. Yeah, a tracing could work, but seems somewhat more error prone to me.

A custom guard is always an option, but they usually run about 85-100 dollars from WD, and it is not a quick turn around time if that matters.

I usually check used shops for pickguards because they: already have some wear and won't look too new, they are way cheaper, and you can check the fit instantly. The Music Go Round by me used to get American guards all of the time, and I bought quite a few at under 20 a piece.

Might I add: The P I’m referring to is a fabulous bass with a really, really nice neck, but it was/is the ugliest tort guard I’ve ever seen.

I don't have any insight on P's, never owned one. But I will say I sent a tracing to this place for a custom one it worked great. Very wide selection on colors too. Also, no affiliation with them other than one good experience.

[Old Fart]

I have a "Made in Japan" Fender Precision with the truss rod nut on the heel of the neck and the serial number on the front of the headstock. Serial number is E+6 digits. I think this makes it 1984-1987. Standard pick guards fit perfectly on it.

I threw on a standard pick guard a few years back and it fits but doesn’t line up well.
