19mm string spacing, 5 strings...

I have some 17.5, and am perfectly comfortable on them, I can play thinner well enough though. Your Stambaugh sounds to have about the same string spacing as Roscoe, and they definitely are very comfortable.



My problem, btw, is not to make the Squier more suitable(for those suggesting mods), as much as wondering should I not count out other 19mm 5ers because of my experiences with it. I'm very interested in quite a few 5ers with 19mm spacing, and have even missed out on some sweet deals because of my perceived issue. As I said above, I can't exactly go to a shop and try more out, as there's nothing of the like available locally. I mean, if I'm stuck with my Roscoes and Gadow, it's not in any way a bad fate, they're excellent instruments I'm dead comfy with, but there's so much more out there I'd love a swing at.

I would pay attention to the neck width. You might have to take a leap on one, but I'd almost bet it's more the HUGE neck that squier has than just the string spacing. Not all 19mm spaced basses have super wide necks like that Squier.

That's what I'm starting to think, and prompted this thread. I mean, my Roscoes are pretty dang close to 19mm.

I'm looking at a bass right now, with 19mm spacing, a 1.75 nut, and it seems to be only, 2.5-3mm wider then the Roscoe at the last frets. I'm thinking unless it's super fat front to back, surely I'd have no issues. And the neck specs front to back seem fairly standard, I'll have to mess about with my calipers more tomorrow.

I wasn't kidding. My Bongo has 17.5mm spacing and my left hand loves it, while my Alebic Epic 5 has 19mm spacing which I find much more comfortable for my right. They both sound great.

NBR - Who do you like in that SF - NYG game, now that the Saints are out of the hunt? I hope the Giants clean their clock!

This stuff gets more crucial to me now I'm playing 5's. It makes a HUGE difference to me.
I've found my comfort combo in an MPG Level 5 - 1 3/4" nut and 19mm spacing. It also has a semi chubby round profile. I have pretty small hands so it flies in the face of logical thinking that I wouldn't want the slimmest neck for comfort. Undeniable, nothing has stood up to it yet. I suspect the thinner flatter necks just seem wider in proportion even when the numbers are close.
I am on a quest to find other brands that have this, I've sadly ruled out some wonderful basses.:crying:. I suppose I should feel lucky having found the MPG's.

The Rickenbacker 4004cii5 that I had was 19mm spaced at the bridge ... it was too wide for me.

From what I can remember, Sadowsky do 1.75" nuts as an option, and aren't too flat front to back, might be worth looking at, though I don't know is that USA only, or Metro too.

Mayones Jabbas might be suitable too, but I'd expect kinda hard to find there.

Funnily enough, I have big hands and chubby fingers, but so far have got one better with smaller profiles, go figure.

Yes, for an additional $1000+ I can have a NYC with the smaller nut.:rollno: You are right in the profile is not as flat as some. I am selling an MV5 right now (damn it sounds good!)
Interesting, I see a Mayones Jabba here for sale, I'll take a closer look. Are these more well known on your side of the pond?

Unless you're after the chambered body and all the other stuff, the 1k for the nut option is indeed crazy.

A bit more, I definitely see more posts from UK guys owning them, or interested in them, but haven't seen one in person here in Ireland.
