IMO, the major factor on players having a bad gigs is not the booze or drugs themselves, but something that's going on in someones life... which leads to not being present during the performance.
Stress from work, not sleeping, feeling low, fight with your lady (or man), money trouble, thinking about what you have to do tomorrow... often those kind of feelings lead to self medication with booze or drugs, and then we blame the booze or drugs.
Like the Jaco thing... easy to blame his thing on drugs, but now in 2019 we know more than that.
I had a poopy day and I want to forget it and not let it ruin my gig, so let me smoke a little... and you have a bad gig. Easy to say it's because of weed. Had a great day, in a great headspace, having a great time, so let me smoke a little... best gig of your life.
Like I said in the other thread, things are not black and white, and we do better when we widen the lens a little.
My worst experience was a guitar player and meth. The music got bad sometimes, but was sometimes ok,,, but it was more the other stuff. Disappearing, becoming a flake, lying, stealing your poopie... all that other stuff was way worse than "the music was suffering." Hell, just watching a human go through that stuff sucks a lot worse than someone missing changes.
