$20 Mosky Black Rat

my "modded" rat pedal

I am curious on this.

So far my impression is that the Black Rat is an excellent pedal, especially for the price. I would say it sounds just as good to me as the Cat Tail, but the CT is much more versatile. If you want the traditional Rat sound plus extra, I'd absolutely get the CT, but that seems like an obvious thing to say. I do also think that due to the versatility, the CT does much better for lower gain settings, because you can really dial in how much you want and where, it seems.

I'm still playing around figuring out how to dial in different tones I want with the CT. For the sound I like (think Dave Curran of Unsane) I can very easily dial in a harsh aggressive tone with the Black Rat, where I'm still trying to find the right balance of knob turning to get it just right on the CT.

I've only used each for about 30 minutes so far, but I must say I'm extremely impressed with the Black Rat. Well worth the money.

Played around with both a bit more today, in standard and C standard. Both pedals still have plenty of low end at medium/high gain in my opinion. The sounds of the Cat Tail are much more nuanced, but at the moment I'm honestly preferring the Black Rat for a medium/high gain thick distortion. Maybe I just havent found the right setting with the Cat Tail that suit me though.

On both pedals I'm setting the filter around 9:00 to 12:00 (favoring the treble side), with the distortion around 12:00. For lower gain I think the Cat Tail does have the advantage, since you can use the two extra knobs to dial in specifically how much dirt you want for the low and higher frequencies (if im understanding that right). So you can get a much more nuanced dynamic sound. I'm sure this is also true for high gain, it's just harder to notice in my opinion.

Sounds like you're going thru what a lot of people here did...the cognitive dissonance of a $20 pedal sounding as good (or sometimes better) than a boutique offering.

Is it me but I used it last practice and it sounded like the low end disappeared completely. Filter was at 10, Dist at 12, volume at unity so not crazy settings.
Can't say I've noticed the low end disappear, and I run my amp with the 40hz slider all the way down so the wife doesn't rattle. Maybe you would benefit from a blend pedal; while this pedal 'loses less' bass than other rats, the rat isn't the best circuit for preserving the low end from the incoming signal and 'loses less' may end up not being enough for your mix.

any more reports on this in live setting? Im on the fence with this and the MXR M85. The M85 pops up in classified here and there so really in that context the price difference is about 55 bucks. Just wondering...

Yep, get the M85. It's worth it for the better bass response. I can't make the Mosky work with bass. Some can, but I need the strong lows or I feel like I dropped out of the mix.
