$200 and no idea where to start

Dude, I'm sorry to hear that you had a problem with your teacher. Not getting along with a teacher or student can be a very frustrating and difficult experience, but seeing as how many of us here on talkbass teach, announcing that you "had to spite her somehow" isn't going get you any respect or credibility in a community of musicians who try to respect each other.


That being said, troll craigslist religiously. You'll be able to find a cheap bass for sure. But a gigable amp in your price range is going to be tricky. I've seen some really cheap SWR workingmans stuff on CL lately, but it's still just a bit above your price range.

it wasnt a teacher...i havent had a lesson in about 5 years (doesnt make me sound like a good player but i think i am....thats another story) she was an orchestra director that played the flute. She did not know one thing about bass or even the bass cleff... i realize what I made it seem like and Im sorry for that. I loved my bass teacher(s) they were some of the kewliest people I have ever met and could play the best I had ever heard!

The fact that you feel the need to spite anyone, flute teacher or bass teacher, tells me you need to do some growing up. No one likes a spiter.

you're right....spite was a bad choice of word. im not trying to be a jerk but she was the one that ruined the bass. She purposely gave us (as in the orchestra) music that was on the level of 6th graders (high school students). She changed my love for the bass for the worse. Im not saying that she made me quit...that was my choice and im happy with it

Made in USA Peavey Fury (like a Fender Precision). I think I saw one yesterday on daddys.com for $199. That may have even included shipping. Excellent quality. Made in USA. P-bass look and sound. How can you do better for $200?

I'd then think of a Vox Amplug or Recording mixer (both under $50) you can use headphones...

Save the rest of the money.

I love my SX, sadly while screwing around with different tuning and set-ups the neck got messed up and it's got dead spots.

BUT, my Acoustic B410 is great, and my Acoustic B20 is the best practice amp for the money.

My advice. Go to the music stores and play everything you can get your hands on. I'd also advise purchasing a decent bass then saving for a decent amp. With only $400, even the used route isn't going to yield many options to get both a bass and amp.

You can also do some research online for prices and wittle down some brands and models to try out in the music stores. This site pulls in most major music retailers and you can search within a price range. I did a quick Invalid Link Removed on 4-stringers in the $100-$300 range...

Too much talk about Squiers IMHO. You don't HAVE to follow the crowd and use a Fender. try anything, ANYTHING that doesn't have a split P pup, or a Jazz single coil. There's a reason there's so many users on here talking about buzz problems off light tubes, feedback etc. on the cheaper Fender derivatives. Next thing you know you'll be writing one of the ENDLESS threads about "what pickup should I buy?"

Check out all the used gearshops, especially for old but not overpriced.

Yeah, yeah, "they're popular because they're good", but they're mass produced PLANKS.

Definitely a buyer's market for used gear these days. I would recommend a used Yorkville Bassmaster 200 combo amp (excellent value for money) and you could choose from quite a few decent quality basses with the 200 you have left over after buying the amp. A few names....Ibanez sr or roadstar basses, Yamaha bb series, Fender Squire series....the list goes on.
