The Weber contract pays out $27 million in the first year. That is 16% of the entire Preds franchise's worth if they want to match. I doubt that happens.

Expect to see a trade worked out between Nashville and Philadelphia for those four draft picks in the coming week to insure Nashville doesn't match. Philadelphia gets to keep their draft picks and Nashville gets players in return for the thievery of Weber. Nashville now needs players and payroll to hit the cap floor and Flyer could shed some salary and players to clear some space for the cap.
All I'm reading now indicates this may be the case and also indicates a trade was in the works and Holmgren was getting tired of waiting and was worried the Vancouver was trying to move in on his kill.

1st-rounders usually have a very good hockey career. I'd rather have four 1st-rounders than any specific player. Also remember that if that single player gets injured, that's it! But if you get four 1st-rounders and one gets injured, you have 3 similarly talented dudes to carry the load.
If Philly gets Weber, I'll be happy for one thing ; that contract along with Bryzgalov's will definitely tie them up financially for a long long time. Up front, they're starting to rely too much on their rookies to pick up the load. So far, they've lost Jagr and Van Reimsdyk. They have weak wingers.
Meanwhile, Nashville is in a serious pickle. Nevermind the fact that they're far from being the richest team, but they are badly managed. Getting both Kostitsyn brothers was a mistake, seducing Radulov amounted to nothing, instead of resigning Suter and getting Parise down which might've led to a discounted contract for Weber since he's been whining about wanting to win for the longest time, they lost both star D-men, which includes their captain and biggest star.
I don't believe Nashville will match because they don't have the capital for it and the fact that Weber signed the offer sheet says that he doesn't want to be there. It's a team of nobodies, limited financial resources, limited talent, and limited potential. Barry Trotz is a genius and continues to astound me every year with how much he can do with so little... but he needs some no-BS help stat!

Many trades were in the works and Nashville kept saying that they're reviewing all the data but kept blowing deadlines. Eventually, Holmgren decided to use the last weapon left in the current CBA ; the offer sheet.
At least, he didn't use it like a certain GM used it for Penner.

Look at how low those first rounders are likely to be. You seriously think Nashville will want first rounders from 20th on down? 1st rounds from 10th on up, maybe they have an impact on your team like Pittsburgh's had after they tanked and got Crosby and company in successive years, but except for one nightmare year for Philadelphia, you are not getting high draft picks from them.
And Jagr and Van Riemsdyk weren't much of a loss. Jagr lost it later in the season and was no help in the playoffs. Van Riemsdyk is way over-hyped. He had one super playoffs a year ago and has been pretty average in the regular season.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. You're not even guaranteed to get a Top 6 forward from a first round draft pick when you're in the 20s, and that's even after a couple of years in the system first.
Plus the Predators need IMMEDIATE help. Draft picks aren't going to help them NOW. They have to hit that cap floor right now and they can't do that with a draft pick next year, then the year after that, etc... Holgren is going to deal this trade from absolute strength right now. Whatever they were working out in trade before is gone off the table now. Holmgren holds all the cards now. Nashville's Poille is so screwed!
Nashville was screwed when they couldn't get out of the second round this year. They put themselves in a "win now" situation, and couldn't deliver.
I am jealous of Philly though, that was a great move. Sadly it doesn't change the fact that they have chokesgolov between the pipes, not Peca Rinne. I still don't see them winning the cup with that goalie situation.
Detroit was screwed after the Parise and Sutter signings. The two biggest prizes after were in the division (Nash and Weber) and neither team wanted to trade to a division rival. They may go after Doan, or Simens on a one year deal, but neither are long term solutions to the loss of Lidstrom. Ironically, Hockey has so much parody, I still believe the Wings are as good a team healthy as the current champs. But I have a feeling every Wings fan would like to see them get younger even if it means trading a Zetterberg or Franzien. It's time to shake things up. While they've certainly had injury issues the last two years in the playoffs. The reality is they haven't gotten out of the second round in the last two years. Isn't this Weber deal essentially very similar to the Kovalchuk deal that the NHL rejected? Incredibly front loaded with a very weak end? I wonder if we'll see any type of response from the NHL.
Yes I did, I'd rather lose Franzen than Helm though. I heard Filpilla was in the mix instead of Helm. Two years ago I thought with Franzens play he could become one of the premier power forwards in the league. But he has failed to take it up a notch since. Helms energy was sorely missed in the playoffs last year. I personally think the Columbus GM is being a D@*@ on this one. Nash is a very good player, but the Wings made a very good offer. With multiple starting forwards. I don't think he'll get a better offer. And next year he'll just walk.
As far as Weber, SI thinks that Nashville will match and maybe the league will help them with the front end. The league wants a viable competitive franchise in the South, and Nashville has a reasonably good fan base. A lot of the money on the front end is signing bonus which the league averages through the whole contract in cap hit. I believe he's getting 27 million in the first year with bonus. If Nashville matches its great for them, because they have their captain to build around locked up for 14 years. It was a risky move by Weber, and riskier by Philly, because they have chokegolov locked up behind him.
Yeah, and that resulted in the first time a major professional sports league in North America canceled a complete season because of a labor dispute.
