2013 Ampeg V-4B 100W Reissue Pt2

I started out on my Dad's old 60's Selmer Treble & bass 50w tube into matching 2x12" cab in 1990, quickly progressed later that year to 100w SS amp that I built myself from kits into an Acoustic 407, then an Acoustic 450 amp, a Trace AH100, then spent the next 20 years gigging a GK 400RB into either a 15" JBL or Ampeg 410.
I never need huge stage volume and these days I play through a pair of DB112NT's with either an Aggie TH-350 or Shuttle 9.2...

This thread is making me crave those early days of the Selmer and making this SS guy of over 20+ years seriously consider a little tube n tranny action to add to the gigging amp stable... Damn you TB ! ;)

Any of you guys think the V-4B amp would go well with a pair of Aggie DB112NT's (2 @ 4ohms total).

I played my v4b thru my 610 cabinet this past weekend at an outdoor festival. Their was PA support...but I had the gain at 12 o'clock and the master at 9 to 10 o'clock for stage volume and in all honesty it was really loud and sounded awesome! I would not want to turn up any louder on stage! Sound guy was ready to turn down the bass in the house. This is the best amp I have played thru period!

This is what makes it so difficult to recommend better amps to our friends outside the .U.S.
This market here is saturated with every kind of amp to can imagine.
All the retailers list the V4B reissue for $1299.00. USD
Street price should be 20% off of that if you have any clout with your sales rep or store manager.

I share your pain, Pimmsley. List price across the Tasman here in New Zealand is $3000, although I was able to negotiate a deal for $2400. However, I would happily do it again - this amp really is that good.

Yes indeed FFTT, I'm very envious of the new, used, music and audio gear market in the U.S. and it's the main reason I buy most of my new gear direct from the U.S. these days if it's under the import duty tax threshold ($1000AU).
Maybe I can keep an eye out for a used one on TB that meets that condition, I would risk the transit if the amp was packed for shipping by a fellow bass player... er, well, most... Lol
Do you know if the power transformer is muti voltage tapped ? (Allowing a wiring change for 240v)

How do you find it compared to yr SUPER BASSMAN? I'd be terrified :woot::woot: that IF I got the V4B that for 80% of my gigs I'd be using it & therefore the SUPER BASSMAN wouldn't see much use :spit::spit:
I REALLY love the Super bassman - WOULD really love the V4B..... But really don't wanna be in a position of not using one very often.:bag::bag:
The SB300 DOES sound better at - at least - some sorta volume. I used it at a restaurant- jazz/blues - gig last Sunday & it was barely ticking over- still sounded great but it DOES sound noticeably better once the volume is up a tad more. :hyper::hyper:

hmmmm tempting... so, how's yr V4B going? And does yr SB300 see much time still? :eyebrow:

Truth be told, Rod, I am finding it a perfect combination with the SB300. There are plenty of gigs, especially with my blues/rock band, where I need the grunt and headroom of the SB300 (remember I like a clean tone). That said, I am doing a stage show at the moment and the V4B is just perfect as indeed it is with a 60s style combo I have done a little playing with. You may remember that I recently repurchased my sadly missed Orange AD200 and have ended up with a 100, 200 and 300 watt tube amp combination. I never thought I would say it, but if I had bought the V4B first I would not have worried about the Orange. The V4B really is a superb little amp, lightweight, simple and with a baked in great tone. I think you would still use the SB300 but for smaller halls the V4B is a great alternative to have. Plus it it is nice to have an Ampeg and a Fender in the stable:). They tend to pick temselves for the gig. You would probably find you dividing yourself equally between the two. And yes, the V4B really is that good.

There's a big V4B R/I thread here. Might as well ask the guys who own one if it comes 120 volt only or if it is already outfitted with an international power supply.

You could also e-mail Sam Ash or Sweetwater sound.

Thegearpage.net Emporium is also a good place to look and I think they have a special AU section.

The standard V4BR power transformer can be wired for 100V, 120V, 200V, or 240V operation. Fuses (external and internal) and the power cord would also need to be changed.

In terms of warranty, you'd have to ask Loud but some companies will only honor their warranty in the region that the amp was purchased in. So if you imported the amp from the US, you might need to send it back there to have it serviced under the warranty.

I continue to receive positive feedback from musos about the V4B/2 x SVT210 rig. I keep on expecting to be told to turn down, yet the comments I receive from the MD indicate the balance is perfect and the tone is great. Not many bass rigs you can really hear youself with clearly on stage without being disproportionately loud out front. Not often a lead guitarist tells you that the bass sounds nice and tight! The rig is an absolute joy to play - I had been using passive Fenders with great success with it, but went with the Sadowsky at the weekend and it was a blast. And so easy to schlep and set up. Thanks for the recommendation, Jimmy.

Now y'all got me thinkin about the 210AV cabs but I'm gonna get another 212AV first to finish out my rig for loud situations.

Really glad you're enjoying it, Tim! Not the most heavy duty cabs on earth but they do have a sound.

TC, it's nice to have the smaller cabs for sure, but really, a single 212av isn't much more weight than a couple 210av's ;)

Same experience on my end - nothing but compliments regarding the bass tone I'm putting out with the same rig.

Twelves have never really worked for me, but I am open to persuasion. That said, I have no idea how far I could push the 2 x 210avs - and I certainly have no intention of trying. I just get the sense that there is a point with the V4B/210 combo that I could do some damage, but at the moment the speakers are handling everything I am (sensibly) throwing at them. Having put my back out recently(it has come right now), the ease of schlep of the two cabs really saved me.
I ask myself whether the 212av cab with the V4b will go much louder without farting than two 210avs - has anyone compared them?
