2015 Gibson SG Bass...price doubled?

Im a recent Gibson owner, over the past 37 years I have owned everything from fender usa to pudella to Rickenbacker to epiphone to Fernandez to squire, etc , I wish I had purchased my Gibson sooner! I do have a fender jazz bass that I really like and an Ibanez artcore I like as well. The only 2 basses on my wish list are a birdsong and a breedlove acoustic. I guess Gibson basses are like the grateful dead, either you like them or you don't. no in between?

Yeah a lot of countries who's economies are based on the dollar are publicly already saying they are going to switch to the euro in 2015. Australia is one of them if I'm not mistaken. Gibson is just being pro active. What it will eventually mean is everything made in America from basses to cars will see massive price hikes overseas to make up for the currency rates. This is what happens when we put a decade of wars on a Chinese credit card. The value of the dollar falls.

You've got that a little backwards--the dollar has been appreciating. Most countries have opened up the credit card even more than the USA so their currencies are falling faster, making US products more expensive in their countries.

I dunno... I don't hate the idea of owning a Les Paul bass. Just their sound is a little 'boxy' for me, if that makes sense, but I'd totally rock it.

Pickup placement is all wrong for me on the SG bass. Tbird doesn't do it for me, looks-wise.

I have just got my 2014 SG Bass with satin fire burst Used in Mint condition, on 2014 Boxing day, for Canadian $499 (approx $439 USD) with the case, what a great deal, brand new on selling in Canada for just CAD $799, approx USD $699, now sold out. Now the new 2015 SG selling for CAD $1679

They did a run of them a couple years ago, then they did a run of V basses.

They did a Moderne (not really re-)issue fairly recently as well, didn't they? That's what I'd like to see, anyway.

I just bought a 2013 Gibson SGJ, but that was because it was being blown out at a decent price... I got the thing shipped to my door for basically $380 US, and they go for around $550 US regularly.

I won't be buying another Gibson. The price increase pushes everything into a price range range where there are better instruments at every price point. At the cost of a new high-end Les Paul, You could pay a luthier to build you a far superior instrument...

The thing I'm most pissed about is that they decided to discontinue the faded and worn finished instruments. Those were the cheapest introduction into a US made Gibson, and now those are going to be done away with...

This is why the SG here was purchased used for $695. Previous owner bought it, played it a little but never knew what SG's were about or for I guess so it had little wear on it BUT the price was a LOT less than "new". I had an EBOL in the 70's so I knew what the mudbucker can do and was/is good at.

so i'm perusing the Link Removed as i do once a month, when i see their 2015 SG bass.

yes it has some upgrades but it's also double the price that they were asking last year.

what would have cost £650 before, is now £1,200! how do they justify such an outrageous price hike?

If I'm not mistaken they changed the pickups on them. It was in the Guitar Center fliers that they send out a while back.

I still think $800 for a faded SG in a Hard shell case is a solid Deal. When compared to the other major Manufacturers you are still in import land. I don't have problem with that either. Just pointing out because it is very, very important to some.

I play what I like. And I really really like the SG Bass. If there were no other options I really think I would wait for a sale and buy the 2015 for around $1500.

I do think $1679 is a lot to pay for a pretty finish, inlays and a better(?) bridge. But if thats not important to you buy the faded. Especially now since you can find the 2014's on close out.
