215 cabs. Whats good?

I have a Peavey 2X15 thats sounds Very good. I use it with my Ampeg SVT VR. It has eminence speakers in it. I love it. I would have bought an older 2X15 ampeg, but they are very heavey. The peavey is the perfect wieght for hauling around to gigs. I replaced the front cloth to match the blue sparkle of the Ampeg head. You can get that cab fairly cheap.

How much does it weigh ?

You will definitely love the sound of a Peavey 215D w/ Black Widows. Here is a pic from when I had both a 215 (thinner, older version) & and a 215D w/ slot ports. The 215D is a little shorter, but slightly wider, and deeper. Also the drivers are slightly offset due to the ports on the side. But basically the best way to identify them is to read "215D" on the id plate on the back.

I had installed Peavey 1505DT's in the thin model which sounded only slightly better than the original square magnet drivers, all in all a good sounding cab. Don't be confused by older 215 enclosures with speakers that look sort of like Black Widows. The square magnet drivers sometimes had aluminum dust caps but they had a "dot" in the middle. And if you look at the edge of the driver it is stamped steel. Those are NOT Black Widows. Black Widows have an aluminum cast frame which is clearly visible as silvery. Newer Black Widows have black dust caps (like in my 215 older enclosure.)

But the 215D is another matter, it sounds downright magical, as is, I wouldn't dream of touching the drivers in there... The sort of cab when you first hear it you really know you have something immediately.

Both cabs weighed roughly ~100 lbs. Easy to roll about and easy enough to move up stairs and carry down them.

I picked up a Hartke 215XL cab for $150 for my gig rig and love it and I use a GK 700RB head with it. One of my bass players from way back in the day when I was playing drums had a 215 Crate cab that sounded great but I don't know what model it was.

bought a new Bergantino NV215 + new Berg cover, pricey. I tried this cab with B1500, GK 1001RBI, F1, Neopak and either Skylines' Jobo5 or 55-02D, just did not make it for me. I know many say these cabs sing with a all tube head, just never owned one of those. Got a VT pedal recently, wonder how that woulda worked with it?

I sold the cab/cover at a pretty good loss to a TX TBer in still like new condition only a few months old and only like 4 gigs. His eyes lit up when he saw it, then more when he played his Sadowsky thru it. I think he new he had scored. But I was just not using the cab at all by then.

I guess I'm just hooked on ported cabs is all I can guess cause I'm using ported GB 212's, Eden 410's, Eden 210's and I can get the nice big bottom and cut thru tone I like. I just never could get that with that NV cab. Sorta wish I had it back to give it another try though.

Yeah I know, I read so many good things about this cab. I first took the NV610 from this store, gigged it then took it back for the NV215. I just could not make it work for my needs at the time. I'm in a TX blues/blues rock band now. The NV's could def work in that context. But I do alright.

FOR OP: Good thing about an inexpensive, older,large 2x15 cab. If it don't work for you, pull the drivers out......instant house. No more homeless mother****er. Score!

I'm leaning towards finding a sunn 215. I've heard those are pretty light too, which is cool since I tour and ****.

I can't bring myself to buy peavy gear, I just can't.



So check this out, I have a friend that has an 80's sunn 610 guitar cab. It's in like perfect condition and he's offered it to me for the insane price of $150.

How much would it cost/effort to drop the ohms? I wonder if I would dig the sound. For the price it's probably worth it.

i've got a Sunn 2x15 and its not light in the least. toured the country with it twice and it was chore at every show... but the tone is worth it.

I recently found an old Traynor 2-15 loaded with Eminence Legends for $250. That's for the loaded cab. You can't even get the speakers that cheap, nevermind with the box!.

What kind of Traynor cab? I have a YCV-215 that was made specifically for bass - it's deep and ported. Traynor also made shallower, sealed 2x15's that do much better as guitar amps.

Either way it's a deal, but don't count on it pounding out the lows on bass if it's the shallow one.

i'd get an old ampeg cab or sunn cab and load it with eminence delta 15a's if you want an old school ampeg sound with legit 600w power handling, or with eminence kappalite 3015's if you want a little more power handling, a little more low end, and neos to lighten the load. or sometimes you'll find them with really badass old speakers that maybe don't handle much power but sound great.

theres a guy here with a v6b 2x15 ......but he wants way too much ......and both drivers are blown.....it would suit my v4b if i can just get the price back in orbit

i love my Ampeg 215e it sounds killer...full range of tones and tons of lows if you want em...it can be tricky to find one...but when you do they are worth thr used price...i got mine in mint condition for $400.00

I want another so i can run a 4x15 setup but im afraid my bandmates wont let me

Well, then prepare yourself to either spend more money, and/or waste your money on something that won't perform nearly as well - like that Sunn guitar cab, for example... IMO, you'd be throwing away money on that particular 610 - because it's not going to work well for bass, no matter what you do to it...

I am a huge fan of the Berg NV215, especially with an all-tube head. However, if you are talking older 2x15 cabs that kick butt, don't forget Mesa/Boogie and Trace Elliot!

Both of these cabs are great stand alone options, and they can both get plenty growly/snarly.
