Most pros use a rule graduated in sixty fourths. Sometimes that rule will include hundredths, too.

They're five dollars at the local hardware store or the big home center out on the four lane.

Tru nuff. A six inch mechanic's rule in 64ths is probably the simplest and cheapest for action measurements.
