3 Bass Limit

OK... same answer I trot out, every time one of these "If you could only have...." threads show up on TB:
I would have NONE. Not any; zero, zip, nada. I'm not a musician; somebody who is driven to make music, first, last, and always. I'm just a Biker - who likes to play bass. Although I learned to play way back in 1968, I learned on a high school friend's bass (a lefty, '68 Rick 4001) because he wanted me to share the experience with him. And, although I played other peoples basses after that, I didn't own one until 1988. I have all the ones I have, because I just... like them. And, since I moved from Las Vegas to northern Indiana 18 months ago, I can't ride year 'round any more; so, playing bass is something to do in the winter, when the snow's up to my belly button and my Harley is languishing in the garage, with it's gas tank full of fuel preservative and it's battery attached to a Battery Tender... Basses are just something to fill the time when I can't/don't ride for some reason. Which is what I'd much rather be doing... Musicians play; Bikers ride. I'm a Biker...
But, I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings, so... in the spirit of the thread; if I could only keep 3 out of... way too many? I suppose it would be these;
- '73 Rick 4001;
- '78 Fender P-Bass (my first bass); and,
- '13 Gibson Thunderbird.
Now, you'll have to excuse me; I feel a need to go to the garage; start my Harley; and sit on it for a while - garage door open, of course...:cool:

Okay, just for you: if you could have only three left-handed motorcycles, what would they be?

I could get to 4 very easily... the travel bass and Jag Shorty I could get rid of quite easily.
I'd have to keep the fretless, the 8-string and a 4 string.
The decision between the Ibanez and the Franken-Pbass would be difficult.
The Ibanez is better balanced, easier to play and more versatile than the Pbass.
But the Pbass is a Pbass, it's also a great bass with a fantastic neck, it's a Pbass, has great tone, is a Pbass, and it's black. It also has a lot of great memories for me from gigging with my two daughters for years.
I'd probably go with the heart rather than with the head and get rid of the Ibanez..... it could be replaced whereas the Pbass with its' custom Jazz neck, Bill Lawrence pickup and a lot of memories would be hard to replace.

If for some reason you were only allowed 3 basses, what would your 3 be and why?

I have precisely 3.

Jet black, ebony board, chrome hardware 2004 Carvin LB70P. 18v active/passive with 3 band EQ. Neck through, 24 frets, string through. J/HB/piezo. Pan pots for all 3.
2012 Carvin LB70PF with 3 piece body (walnut, maple, claro walnut top). 5 piece neck through walnut with 2 maple stripes, string through, 24 stops. 18v active/passiv with J/J/piezo. Fretless birdseye maple board with hard as nails finish.
2014 Clement #346. Kim body, one piece swamp ash. Maple bolt on neck. Passive with Carvin split in classic P position. 24 stops, string through. Board is Ipe. Burled myrtle top.

Why, for these? Easy. I dig a black bass. Got the electronics upgrades. Then, I got my first fretless as the same as my fretted #1 for transfer of muscle memory and J/J for that sound. Lastly, treated myself to a dream build with Tom Clement and a passive P fretless with a bare wood board and flats? :) These 3 speak for themselves.

Pics of the two fretless basses are below.

There was a time when I purposely and intentionally had 3 Leo basses: Fender Precision, Music Man Stingray, & G&L JB-2. Then my nephew posted on Facebook that he was selling his Music Man Stingray 5 to finance a Lakland 5. I called him to say “Do not pass go”. I sold the G&L to buy the MMSR5. No regrets. So…
  • ‘73 Fender Precision
  • ‘94 Music Man Stingray
  • ‘01 Music Man Stingray 5
