3 ways America should be more like Canada

Canada has a much smaller population, much more of the resources are held by the government(due to the monarchy style government) than they are in the USA. The Canadian spends more on each citizen than the USA because there is more and it has to get spread over fewer. As more is spent people naturally become used to it and become dependant upon it..."entitled".

Our histories ARE very different but that is to be expected since one of us broke free of control from across the pond about 200 years before the other.

even so,i can recall a time when we were more independent and not afraid of a days work..we learned to do without the pro sport franchises that need tax funded arenas ...and did not expect every facet of life to be mandated and paid for by government.....the canadian that spends his money on other canadians has no choice regarding on who or how that money is spent....

these days hardly anyone can grasp that borrowed money must be repaid with interest....there's actually a tv series where a lady comes into the homes of actual adults who are so far in the hole that she has to put them on a budget like 12 year olds,and that's exactly how they sound...

it's as if they have no idea that fifty grand a year does not buy you a downtown condo,a queen for a day wedding,honeymoon trips,new cars, boats ,cabins,and a dozen maxed out charge cards......and the college debt is still hanging out there.....

.....the people cry bread.....but won't give up the condo,the beamer or the jet ski..... the spoiled brat progeny of the spoiled brat progeny of the boomers,the first generation spoiled brats are now running the show.....

I was talking with a friend's sister and she did not even know what a resume is and she is almost finished grade 12 and will soon be entering the work place. She said she was never taught that at school. Up here we have a mandatory course in high school called Planning 10 where students learn how to write a resume, cover letter, how to read a pay cheque, what deductions are, what a budget is, the basics of investment, exploring career options etc etc. She said high schools where she was from dont teach that. To me that stuff is essential.

My wife is a teacher and we would totally agree - regular high-school education is crap in most areas here. About the best many can do is try to steer their child into college-prep curriculum. My youngest got into an International Academy school (free but no transportation).....it was worth it for me to drive her and 3-4 other girls every morning for 4 years. Kid scooped a full-tuition ride in an Honors College. That beats a tshirt any day.;) I think one of the saddest lies in America's education system is that scholarships are available to everyone. My other daughter scored 31 on the ACT(average is 26),3.9 GPA of all college prep,swim team, drama club, head of Art club, community service out the ying-yang. With massive digging we(she and us) found enough scholarship money to cover maybe first 2-2.5 semesters. Of tuition. :banghead: But for many families even the digging for scholarships is next to impossible. And with even marginally lower, yet very good grades like a 3.5 gpa you can forget scholarships unless you are an athlete who gets a sports-related scholarship independent of your academics.

I too actually like most aspects of Canada and Canadians. My favorite Canadian is Marc Emery...still have some of his original catalogues, things will be gold someday.:D

I'm Canadian and I have to agree with this statement. Having weathered the 2008 financial meltdown, we have become a bit smug about (aboot) how much better we are than others. I don't like it.

A lot of the problems in the education system come from the top- they're trying to standardize the curriculum to the extent that certain standards are met, but if this is true, I have to ask why we took the Ohio Standardized tests when I was in grade school IN THE 1960s? Fifty years later and they can't get their shyte together? They have completely revised history, don't teach most of the last century and then, there's the debacle of how they're teaching Math. The rest of the World still uses the standard formulas and symbols, but they're making it hard for an engineer to see the process of getting a result from what's supposed to be an equation.

I only have the Milwaukee Public School System to use as a point of reference for what NOT to do, but kids in schools are causing so much havoc that the teachers can't have the time to teach. Large class sizes contribute to this, as does the high number of kids who don't want to be in school, gang activity and generally bad planning. The MPS annual budget is over $1Billion and the results are abysmal.

They don't teach a lot of what the students will need and all they do is point fingers.

Serious news(truth) Marc is in a federal pen here in USA, and has been learning to play bass. He does a sort of informal blog and I have visited it a few times. Somehow there was a 4 string Bootsy bass at the prison, for use of the small prison/inmate band. He was having fun playing ZZ Tops "Head's in Missisippi" - which is where he is.
