3 Wood Challenge: Solitare

30" scale, fretless
Neck: maple
Body: Norwegian pine
Folding upper horn: Rosewood
Pickup: Homemade
Finish: clearcoate, danish oil or epoxy.

This will be a tribute to Atlansias 1 string Solitare bass.

My english is not that good so I did not find another word for it... The "upperhorn" for the strap button will be something you can fold up against he neck for transporting, like a Swiss army knife

Im off to my work (I'm a theacher) to make the body.

I have not decided where I should put the volume knob. On the upper side of the body like the Atlansia solitare or on the front like a normal bass? I have to think about it...

Thanks, I have always loved to try something odd
I have cut the body in half, ready for gluing to the neck, but I have to figure out if I am going to use a "normal" headless bridgetuner, or a guitar tuner at the bottom. The single string headless tuners I have found on the web are quite expensive, and sold in paccages with 4.

I have allso been thinking about making my own headless bridge tuner, have seen some on this site. Time will show. Right now I'm working on 3 other instruments at the same time, will have to alternate beetween projects...

Just go with a single string bridge piece and a mini bass tuner, like a Gotoh Y shape. Looks like this could be pretty cool.

I will have that in mind, but maybe there are some of the fine builders and luthiers here that have a headless tuner bridge to sell? Hope so!

I think it will work. I will make an "anchor" with a pin attached witch I put the tuner knob... I have to try

I wanted to say that in norwegian, the proper name for anything should have at least one unecessary "s".

But at the end of the day, I'm amazed and I'm convinced this will be an amazing project (especially for a 1-stringer)...

Let me make some non-existent popcorn in my non-existent microwave and watch this beast come to life!

IMO, I I think you should go for the side-mounted control. It looks way more "slick".

Ok, I have found a way to make the tuning bridge (have been to Italy on holliday, an had some time to think an search the www).

Have made the anchor in aluminium. Still have to drill the hole for the string and make a grove in the neck for the bridge and the anchor. Pictures come later today.

That was the right word. It's just an unusual design. Looks good!

Not woodworking but a bit of metalwork...

Found a piece of aluminium (?) in my brothers garage, just the right thicknes.

Using a hacksaw to cut out the anchor:
