3012HO

Please help me with a theory/thinking outloud question.
I don't use tweeters in bass cabs.
I do see a need for a mid driver.
If my notes, from reading other posts, are correct,
if I build a 2x12 cab using 3012HO speakers I should use 2 6" mid drivers to keep up?
What would the benefit or problem be with using, let's say a relatively inexpensive 8" or 10" speaker instead of more expensive mid drivers?

Honestly I think you would be fine with just two vertical 3012HOs if you are not into a tweeter at all.

You may also want to consider a Jack 112 or 212, as the dispersion on those is quite a bit superior to even vertical drivers, according to the charts.

The need for midrange drivers is dictated by the dispersion of the woofer. If you want to run any twelve loaded direct radiating cab above 1.5kHz with wide enough dispersion to be heard by the majority of the audience you need a midrange driver.
Using a cheap eight or ten means you're not using a driver that's engineered to give the best results as a midrange driver.
