3Leaf Audio Club - Episode 2

I'm so easily influenced. As of writing my last post 13 minutes ago I've ordered a Tim-mod Octabvre

EDIT: I should mention that I had one of the early Octabvre pedals with tracking issues. The tone was to die for, but it got a little too dirty and my MXR BOD beat it out in terms of tracking. Those two issues are evidently fixed, so I'm excited to give it another shot.

EDIT EDIT: Oh, and the top jacks saved enough space on my board previously that the wider pedal (compared to the MXR BOD) didn't take up any additional pedalboard real estate. I had less pedals in the bottom row of my board back then, so hopefully that's still the case and I haven't just added on to a career-long game of Tetris.

Here is a comparison that was posted way back in this form:

I very much like both sounds, but did send mine back to Spencer for the Tim-mod after watching this video because I liked the cleaner, more defined octave notes with the entire tone knob range. However, I suggest having a good listen to the video a few times and making your decision on that. Either way, I doubt you would be disappointed.

Check out #135 in this thread for Spencer's explanation and some discussion.

In short, I'd say Tim tuning is more classic OC-2 throughout the tone knob range, whereas original tuning gets very gritty and synthy as the tone knob goes CW. (I've described it as almost like a built in dirt function.)

I ended up sticking with the original, but of course tastes and use cases vary.

Thanks for the input everyone! I decided to go with the Tim-mod version. I think the description of 'clean octave while maintaining low end' is exactly what I'm looking for! I listened to the video jpeck posted thru my HD650s and that sealed the deal.

Hopefully, I'll get it on Friday so I can use it at the gig that night...either way I'm excited to mess around with it!

Thanks again for all the input and discussion!!!

Spencer is delivering mine to The Bass Shop by Thursday (tomorrow).

Hey @silky smoove, how are you contacting him? I know he's been overwhelmed by the orders from his recent launches, but he hasn't responded to me in over a week from a pedal a sent to him for repair (it's been almost 11 weeks though since he got the pedal). :( I'm happy for Spencer, but I'd love to get that pedal back...I know, "cry me a river" :crying:

I dealt with Chad at the Bass Shop here in West Seattle. They're in contact pretty frequently. Spencer has always been responsive to my messages on Facebook (usually no more than a couple days of lag when he's super busy). Your report definitely sounds like an anomaly to me. I wonder if something slipped through the cracks at some point. Very strange, and not typical of his usual customer support in my experience.

EDIT: Speaking of Chad; He just called me to say that my Tim-mod Octabvre is ready to pick up. I'm going to grab it on Saturday. I'll report back with some comparisons to my current reigning champ the MXR BOD, as well as the early-release Octabvre I owned briefly when they were first introduced to the market.

I picked up my Tim-tuned Octabvre today, and can confirm that it's awesome. Tracks better than my MXR BOD which to date has been the best tracking analog octave pedal I've tried. It sounds like an OC-2, but with better retention of the top end in the unaffected portion of the signal. The sub function works perfectly and is capable of fairly insane low end. Sounds great in that mode as the front end for creating analog synth tones. I'm super happy. MXR BOD is going up for sale tomorrow which given my love of that pedal is quite surprising and a testament to the awesomeness of the Tim-tuned Octabvre.

I also have the Tim Tuned Octabvre. I love it. The standard version is great, but prefer the tim-tuned one.
Did you own an original tuning version? I love the synth CW side of the knob so much, I'm afraid I'll lose too much of it. I'd love to hear how much that changed if you owned both.

I also feel like the OC-2 side while not as deep, is probably more mix friendly in the end...

I have a first run Octabvre that was sent to Spencer for both the tracking mod and later the Tim Tuning so while I didn't A/B them, I can talk about the differences.

The two things you brought up are both the exact reasons for the standard tuning. The Tim mod DOES remove a lot of the synthy/lo-fi/robot sound of the Mutron side of the tone knob. It's still there but made much smoother and less noticeable.

And the standard tuning isn't as "deep" sounding as the OC-2 so it may well slot better in a dense mix. For me I use an octaver very often for the basis of a synthy sound so I really needed it to be deeper or my synth sounds get a bit thinner than I like.

My Tim-tuned Octabvre arrived this morning! I can't wait to plug in the afternoon and see what this bad boy can do!
Thanks to everyone who provided feedback, experiences and opinions during the search! It is much appreciated!

I finally had a chance to really get down and dirty with the Octavbre (standard tune) + wonderlove combo. I notice a big difference when plugging the octave into the WL effects loop compared to daisy chaining them. I'm looking forward to adding a blendable fuzz to the fx loop for a nice integrated synth area on my little board... I think I have just enough space for it now that I've gone outboard with the bigger loop station (was previously using RC-30 onboard, now the mega rc-300).

Just me and my drummer locking into some dynamic jams. He was totally blown away by the "synthyness" of the tone, and of course we had to get into some Herbie Hancock lines (Palm grease, chameleon, etc.).

Of particular note, I was playing my fretless Smith, and the ability to go from syncopated staccato to more of a glissando/vibrato approach demonstrated how versatile and generally awesome these pedals are- tracking is fantastic. Really loving it!

So I had a chance to mess around a little with the pedal last night and the sustain and tracking are pretty great across the board except for my C below middle C (3rd fret A string and 8th fret E string). It holds for about 5 secs and then the lower octave cuts out. It does this with my fretted bass, but I didn't find it to happen with the fretless.

...any thoughts or ideas?

Also, the tracking is great!!! When playing a 5'er, where can I expect it to 'misfire' so to speak in the lower registers? At the moment, I've found it to be Low A or so (5th fret E string)

Other than that it's a killer pedal! I'm actually curious to try a standard tuned version at some point to compare the two, but I'm definitely happy with my purchase so far!

I did have the original as well, and I do like the Mutron side a little better on that one, but 90% of the time I keep it rolled all the way OC-2, so was kind of a moot point for me. I liked the added low end, and didn't' seem to make it cut through any less the way I use it.

Thanks for the insight. I love the Mutron side of mine, most of the reason why I kept my Octabvre over the COG T-16.
