3Leaf Audio Club - Episode 2

Beholded! Lol got you in at #75.

75. BassManPatsFan (Enabler)

How do you like that Source Audio EQ? I've been GASing after a Whirlwind Bass 10 for a while, but the SA has a nicer pedalboard size.

5sg.

I like it, but it does more than I need at the moment. Mooer is coming out with a 5 band EQ in a 1590a format that I might buy in favor of the SA. I really only use the pedal to be able to switch between finger tone EQ settings and pick tone EQ settings on the fly. The Source Audio pedal has 4 presets, which could be very cool if you're playing covers or something that requires having a bunch of very different sounds.

Is "PatsFan" in reference to the football team? Man, I thought bass players had better sense than that. ;)

Yessir--I'm from New England. Still feeling the residual effects of the Brady-Manning years? Sounds like someone's still a little mad about his team only managing to win one title in 13 years. :smug: ;)

At least when we won, we weren't caught cheating and when we lost, we weren't trying to kick guys in the groin or walk off the field in a huff without congratulating the other coach. ;)

Just giving you a hard time...I was actually born in Massachusetts and you have good taste in effects so I guess we can still get along. :D

Hah well thanks (about the good taste part...). I only got into effects last year, but I'm now in a band where I use them and more importantly I now have a job that enables (good 3leaf pun, right?) me to purchase some nice pedals. I still have a few more to go before I'll have a "finished" board, but as we all know, no pedal board is ever actually finished.

Here's a quick Enabler question:

I use a voodoo labs pp2 to power my board, including my Enabler. When I power up my pedals, my EBS Multi-Comp turns on immediately (or is engaged once the power to my board is turned on). I use both that and the Enabler as always on effects. Is there a reason the Enabler doesn't do this and is it possible to make it that way? If it would involve too much tinkering with the circuitry, it's probably not worth it, but if it's an easy fix, it could be a fun project. Obviously not very important, but it could be useful for those very quick set up times. Sometimes I have so much to set up in very little time that I forget to engage the Enabler before we start playing.

I have my enabler under my board. Before I set this up I spoke to Spencer and he said the DI and the headphone amp are always on as long as the power is plugged in. I will not be using the EQ so this works fine for me. There are jacks mounted to the side of my board to easily plug in headphones, the Aux in and an XLR. It's fanstastic!

Sorry, I know it's not exactly on topic... just figured this would be helpful info for someone here. Can't speak to your particular issue but I would think it's doable. PM Spencer (Spencer!).

The circuit is configured so that it's always in bypass when the power is plugged in. This is dictated by the software in the switching microcontroller, so it's not easily changed.

*****Hi I need some help from the 3Leaf Audio Club*****

I am interested in purchasing either a Proton or a Wonderlove/Groove Regulator. I am a little confused by the different models and versions.
I have owned alot of filters and my favorite to date is the original Mutron. I love those lowpass up and down tones.
My questions are:
1.) Which model/version "easily' emulates those original Mutron sounds?

2.) Which version of the Proton do you prefer and why?

3.) Which version of the Wonderlove/Groove Regulator do you prefer and why?

4.) For those of you that have both the Proton and the Wonderlove/Groove Regulator which do you prefer and why?

5,) Any benefits/functions of one model/version that was the deciding factor in your purchase?

I play blues, classic funk and r&b. Thanks for your help.

You can go on Youtube and hear them. I have the proton and very happy with it. Not sure if its better than his earlier models although spencer funks it up on youtube. The wonderlove has its benifits and can probably get a little more out of it as far as envelope sounds but the proton had what I was looking for. I heard the old school come out of it ( which was the reason I got it) yet I can also get other flavors. I like the size and functions. You can adjust the up down of the sweep. The range, the attack just like most envelope filters. But you can get a very close mutron sound at least to me. If you like one filter on your pedal board the wonderlove may be what you are looking for. If you are the type that has more than one the proton may be what you are looking for. But you mentioned mutron, any one of his can do that.
Many times people love it and can get what they want out of it. Some just by the way they play and attack the string have more success from one filter over another. Overall I would get a newer version of any pedal cause the guy who is building them is improving it.

Hey Spencer,

2 Quick questions for ya

Do you suggest the PWNZOR before or after your filters?
What do you do for your set up?

I am currently running the PWNZOR in front, by bass is a passive jazz that has a great tone but pretty low output, so I use the PWNZOR for some boost in front.

Your thoughts appreciated...

1) If you want easy, the Proton is probably your answer. Great sound in a small package. It can do a pretty good Mutron sound, but the GR's have a lot more control. I've heard similar reports about the Wonderlove. The Proton is on my main board, but there hasn't been an envelope sound that I wanted that I couldn't get with the GR's.

2) I owned a Fromel Proton (version 1.5) and a V2. I like the V2 better because it has the Decay knob on it for more control over how fast the filter closes. I like a pretty quick filter sound.

3) Never tried a Wonderlove, but the GR1/GR2 are pretty comparable soundwise. If I had to pick, I'd probably go with the GR2 because it has the wet/dry mix and Tone knob.

4) I prefer the Groove Regulators over the Proton, because of having control over Attack and Decay. But like I said in #1, I have the Proton on my main board because to me it's a perfect balance of great filter sound and size factor, which is important when your main board is a PT Mini. I have my GR2 on my bigger board, and I've also been known to have both the GR1 and GR2 on the same board at the same time. If you've got pedalboard space, go for a GR/Wonderlove. More control but still easy to dial in.

5) Not really. Picked up a GR1 based on word of mouth and loved it. Then had to have the GR2 and Proton(s) based on experience with the GR1. I'll have a Wonderlove eventually, and I don't ever forsee getting rid of the GR's. I've owned or tried 24 filters now and the 3Leafs (3Leaves? ;)) remain king of the pack, tied with an EP2. I'd suggest starting with a Wonderlove... the effects loop is fun to play with. :)

I pretty much always have the PWNZOR at the beginning of my signal chain. I don't really have much insight into why - it's just how I've always done it.

I'm opposite. I have my PWNZOR as far at the end of the chain as I can have it. I've tried it up front and it doesn't work as well for me. But like Spencer, I can't really explain why.

I'd say try both, and you'll know which one works better for you.
