Thinking of trading my You're Doom. Just not using it much, and finding my Fifth Gear covering the same stuff adequately. I've even thought of letting go my Octabvre Mini and getting a birthyear OC-2 for those occasions I want octave.

That's crazy - a few years back these sat for months at a time, all less than 200. The standards simply didn't sell. Amazing how things change.

I tried to sell my mini and keep my OC-2 a few years ago. In my final testing before agreeing to a trade in the classifieds, I just couldn’t get past the volume issue and most importantly the voicing option. The Octabvre mini can sit in the mix way better than the OC-2 because of that option.

In the end I sold my OC-2 outright and haven’t looked back.

I agree with this. The voicing option, ability to set the volume, and how it sits in the mix are what sets it apart from other octaves including the OC-2. I really do love my Octabvre mini but the subs from that Tim Tuning make it unusable for me. When I step on the pedal, those subs just push out through the PA. Awesome......but I really tick off a lot of people. I know the new version has the option to turn off the Tim Tuning.

Was your Mini modified with the Tim tuning? I owned a Tim-tuned mkI and an mkIII with both options, and my current Mini sounds very different than either of the previous when in Tim mode, and more akin to the non-Tim tuning.

Any OC-2 I got would have the -2oct disabled, which gives more volume, and potentially a few other mods.

No I don't think so. It's the first generation Mini, white pedal with blue lettering. I believe these had the Tim Tuning incorporated into the pedal.

So far I love the Vulcan XL edge of breakup overdrive. It crunches perfectly just like a real tube amp.

The blend / volume knob interaction is weird to me however. It appears hard to use as a clean preamp so far.
And I don’t see myself using it as a dirt pedal only.

I need to experiment to understand what to do with it. But I love its tone.

My former Darkglass preamp, the Ultra Vintage, does not sound very good to me. But it is very intuitive and can be used as a clean or dirt pre. Handy. But it does not equal the Vulcan XL in terms of tone

Interesting. Mine is the light blue version and, to my ears at least, it sounds closer to the non-Tim vibe. I wonder if there were different implementations of the Mini.

I'm sure there's a description somewhere, I have 2 in my reach, but was there a detailed explanation to what the tim mod did? every now and then I do turn it off, with the filter full CCW. It has more of a COG octave sound on though

Indeed. I personally handed my MKI to Spencer to have it Tim-tuned. My Mini doesn’t sound like the Tim-tuned MKI or the MKIII in Tim mode.

That's because there's a dry volume boost incorporated in the mix knob, it's not quite as easy to grasp as Darkglass pedals. Mix at noon should be dry at unity level.

Yup.
I get how it works. I just don’t understand why doing it this way. It’s harder to dial in.

But the tone (and .. low mids crunch ?) makes me forget about it.

I have ordered a Noble and will use it as my main always ON preamp/DI.
Would it make sense to have the Vulcan XL right before and use it as an overdrive pedal ?

I wanted an overdrive pedal alone and found the Vulcan XL instead. It is great ! But I don’t know how it will sound to have it before the Noble… I am unsure about it.
