Were the previous versions similar to the Up position of the switch ?

I love it in the down position. It strengthens the enveloppe effects !

I'm not 100% sure, as I've never tried the v3/v4. I have a v2 that has the Range switch, which was then it was removed for v3. Going by the manual(s), it makes it sound like up on the v4 is what the v3 was, so I suspect v4 just reverts to what the v2 had for a range switch.

5sg.

How different are the 3rd and 4th generations of the proton? I have the previous version and am not super impressed by it.

The Proton v4 is a little different from the previous versions:

"The circuit has been completely redesigned to offer better tone and a more musical response. It has a new detector circuit based on the one in the Chromatron, and the familiar control layout has a greatly expanded range that can get the classic 1970s filter sounds and well beyond. The new range switch allows for much deeper filter sweeps, and the reworked tone knob covers every soundscape from cocked wah to laser beams."

I recently picked up an IE Xerograph Deluxe, and between that and a Proton V4, I feel like I've got the filter stomp box filter bases pretty well covered. Next step is just going to be Moog synths.

So happy for Spencer, and I hope he spends all of the Proton drop earnings on a fun honeymoon!

Anyone compared the latest iteration of the DOOM2 to the one prior? Is there is a big sound difference with the change he made?
I owned both an original Doom 2 and High Gain Mod version at the same time, and the tonal difference was very minor (the gain difference, however, was significant). I preferred the standard version and kept that. Since the new Doom 2 is based on some of the HGM tweaks, I hope this helps answer your question.
