3Leaf Audio Club - Episode 2

Out of the 3 Leaf line up, I would love to see :

-Chromatron MKII
-Pwnzor MKII
-Enabler MKII

I love those.

Would dig seeing an evolution of the Chromatron - just having more fatness/wetter envelope sounds on tap. It's the least bubbly and most polite of the big box 3Leaf EFs.

Pwnzor would need to bring something unique to the compression market. I get the collectors' mentality toward the Pwnzor, but I always felt it was very replaceable given how many great comps are out there in pedal format.

Enabler MKII - move the XLR out to the left side. Done. That was the fatal flaw on that unit. Bonus points for a Sansamp take on cab sim buttons/filters for lows and highs.

If history shows us anything, there should be new generations of the above 3. Well, two would need to be brought back officially, but 3leaf isn't 3leaf without 5 or 6 variations of each pedal - evolution and all. Those 3 are only mk1 because they both hit it and quit. The last 3 years have honestly been a little strange, same products with only visual changes.

The lettering on it is fragile. The only improvement I would see would be to have a different enclosure so that it doesn't come off.
It's not the enclosure. It was a particular batch of those pedals with a bad finish. I have an early Doom 2 and Chromatron where none of the lettering has come off, whereas I my Octabvre MkIII is one with finish issues.

The only issue I've ever had with my Chromatron is with the clean blend. It blends in the sound as it comes in through the input. In many cases, I'd rather that it blend in the sound as it comes through the fx return.

Interesting suggestion !
My only issue with the chromatron comes from the down filter. It produced loud volume peaks but I guess I am not using it correctly.

I started using a really unorthodox use of the loop a couple years ago and haven't looked back. One way involves a switcher with multiple loops, the other can be used just with a buffered split.

One, I have a Saturn buffered bass split, before the pedal. One output goes to the Chromatron's input (the trigger), the other goes to whatever pedal you you'd like in loop, and then into the FX return of the Chromatron. At this point the blend will be clean/loop effect + envelope output. If you want your extra effect pedal(s) to affect the trigger and be effects/envelope, just run the pedals before the trigger.

The second is what I really like. I run a direct line from my switcher, basically a perfectly clean replica of my bass output, to the Chromatron's input, for trigger. Then, another channel output to the Chromatron's return, in turn the Chromatron's output back to complete that loop. If you're running a matrix switch, you can then add any of your loops to the Chromes FX loop, same goes if you want to add them to the front, before the trigger, or even some after. Every scenario adds a different way of mixing effects with the envelope's blend. You can really nerd out by adding a virtual direct line a kill the the blend altogether, which I use an expression pedal to modulate sometimes.

You can do this with any pedal that has an FX loop, and it get's even easier with the loop bypass like the Chrome has. I got the idea from Spencer's recommendation, but the guys over at Sound Sculpture put it in terms I could understand.

As I’ve said on TB before, the Doom 2 is the pedal that made me want to explore boutique pedals so will always be my favourite. I also think Spencer makes some of the best pedals around - the Pike Vulcan is probably the best OD I’ve used - and I can’t wait to start using these.
The Doom 2 is indeed something special. Since you have the original, the original with HGM, and now the revoiced version you should make a recording for us!

I strongly disliked the clipping of Pike Vulcan XL and I'd rank it in the bottom third of the scores of OD I've tried. Pedals are subjective like that. I do know the standard Vulcan is a bit different to the XL, though, so maybe I'd like that more. You and I have a lot of overlap in our tastes. I'm still hoping you decide to let that Divaricator go :)

100% agree. The Chromatron has a brilliant feature set, but I'd love a version with more snappy filtering. It does smooth and polite, as you said, but doesn't get as aggressive as I'd sometimes like. Or as synthy. So I traded it.

For sure. All the individual effect markets are pretty crowded at this point, but the compressor market is unique in that there's a general consensus on what the top units are (versus the dirt market where things are a bit more of a free for all; I'm not saying some pedals aren't better than others, but that lists of favorites and what's on people's boards varies more widely than it does with compressors).

This is true. My main board has a 2019 Doom 2 (Hot Rolled Steel) with intact lettering, but my gig board has a 2021 Doom 2 (Black Oxide) with compromised lettering.

Chromatron's absolutely have label problems btw, be careful with those.

Things started to go down hill around the black oxide after that, but it's hard to find a octabvre mk2 will all its labels as well.

Question: WHY is it a manufacturer would continuously fail to provide something as simple as proper lettering that doesnt rub off? I dont get it. It is NOT attractive, has happened on multiple iterations, and has been an issue for years. For me, it is a dealbreaker.

This is news to me. I don't think I've seen an Octabvre MKII with missing letters. You know 3 Leaf history better than me, though, so I'll defer to you on this one :)
Oh yeah, that paint/power coat is slippery I guess. I remember one for sale that literally had nothing on it back in the day. That "hot rolled steel" finish was the ticket, whatever that was, worked well

Tell me you don't understand what the slippery slope fallacy is, without telling me you didn't understand what the slippery slope fallacy is. Here is Wikipedia to help you out.

Slippery slope - Wikipedia

Though, I guess, by your own statement, people can't change? And i'll reiterate, these predictions are as good as asking a psychic to tell you what you need to hear - but a psychic probably has more experience. :)

Tell me you have an at-best elementary understanding of logic, psychology, and human behavior without telling me you have an at-best elementary understanding of logic, psychology, and human behavior.

I don't need to be a psychic, I've been a social research and evaluation professional for over 20 years and have a firm understanding of standard deviation, confidence intervals, margin of error, etc.

It's not about people not being able to change... it's about patterns of behavior. And if you can't see a pattern in Spencer's behavior then you are either haven't been paying attention or are willfully disregarding it.

Not a bad idea. I just sold my looper, which would have made that easier/fairer (but if recent behaviour is anything to go by, I may need to rebuy it (I've regretted selling several pedals recently)).

It's interesting you say that about the XL. It is the smaller unit at 18v that I really like. For reference, my other top pedals for OD are the Nightowl Parabellum v2, Damnation Audio MBD2 and the NRG Purrer, so I like OD with a bit of dirt. The Vulcan is the cleanest of them though. I'm hoping to do something interesting with it soon and, if it works, I'll post the results here.

The only lettering issue I’m aware of is the Octabvre mkiii black oxide version (not sure about Proton and Doom 2 in that edition). The case was reported as oily feeling and even velcro wouldn’t adhere properly on it. I don’t think any other release had that issue though. My ghost has been mint for over a year now.

It definitely affects the Chromatron and some Doom 2s as well. I don't recall any Protons with the issue.
@labeledbass has a Doom 2 that's just a black enclosure (bottom row, between R-1 and BEAD) lol

Amp repairs have me looking into selling my Doom 2, which is a bit sad. It's a bummer when a pedal you enjoy might not be available to you again. It's nice to see Spencer producing more, that might make my chance a bit better. I don't generally sweat selling gear but this one has me thinking hard. What have peoples success rates been for picking up a Doom 2 these days?

The ghost was the fix to the previous black oxide finish having problems, I suspect they were the same case just media blasted or finished in another way. The "hot rolled steel" Doom 2 and "same" Proton v4 were fine. I've seen Groove Regs, GR2s, Enablers, Octabrve mk1 and 2 (and obvious 3s), Your're Doom, LBB all have issues with labels.

Probably better to just say the ones I've seen actually do well pre ghost, are the octabrve minis and most of the protons.
