If you ever get a chance. The GR2's usually pop up for far less. Got mine recently for less then a new Proton. I've been through 2 Chromatrons and a Proton v4 in the past and the GR2 was finally the filter that delivered the sound in my head. Not sure if to call them underrated but more rare to popup nowadays but I've seen more of them on the secondary market then Chromatrons.

This is simply the Slippery Slope Fallacy. There is no evidence other than speculation about what will happen in the future. May as well say "well my psychic told me...". Imagine if the sky was going to fall on our heads tomorrow. You wouldn't be able to play bass, and Asterix won't be there to save you. :)

Retailers, and sole traders can do whatever they want. The public or anonymous members of a forum do not dictate other people's business practices. You don't like it, go for an alternative - it is really that simple. Find something else, vote with your wallet. This is especially true if you have never had any experience actually running a business as a sole trader. Something I do currently, and know personally that you get all sorts of people from all walks of life thinking they know better than you and offering, mostly useless, "advice". Simply because they don't know any other perspective than that of a customer. They don't understand regulations or anything similar, don't understand costs involved, time put into a project, RND, or whatever, they only see Product / Price and come up with lines like "I could build that for $x", without thinking "yes but it will also cost you 10 hours of your life, and your time is worth money".

It is very easy to sit behind a screen, anonymously, offering advice that has no impact on you what so ever. Any fallout means 0 to the inexperienced person offering advice and they just walk away from the rubble going "oh well", whilst the business could suffer or have other consequences you aren't aware of.

But again, just think how much better a player people would be if they actually stopped complaining and went and used that time constructively, go practice, learn theory, hell learn a new skill that doesn't relate to bass - work on your health, get outside, learn to meditate, know how to meditate? Good learn Qi Gong or something else new - Expand yourself in other ways. Any way you look at it, you are better off using your time wisely rather than doom scrolling or trolling, or simply being upset about why business chooses to operate in a way that you personally do not like and have no control to change it.

I've been out-of-state with (purposely) limited screen time, but have been munching my popcorn and following this discussion, wondering if I should even chime in because it's fairly pointless now, but just because this is the internet... :D I'll try to keep it fairly diplomatic and succinct:

This. Unfortunately, Spencer now has total affirmation that regardless of whether or not one agrees with the business practice, he can require a bundle and get away with it... and doesn't seem to care.

I was really looking forward to trying for an Octabvre, and I admit I did have a little whisper in my brain that said "I could just toss the preamp and it would still be less than an Octabvre mini on Reverb." But I decided I didn't want to condone the bundle, as it does feel a little like customer exploitation.

It doesn't matter in the end I guess, as Spencer will run his business as he sees fit, and as he even said in his post release, they sold faster. So, I hope none of us are surprised when the next release is attached to a bundle to sell the rest of the Animas.

To me this seems to be Spencer as performance artist. Adds to the mystique.

He’s a skilled bassist. Maybe next time he’ll charge $800 and post notation for a solo bass composition titled “Complainers In Shambles”, offering a hefty discount to buyers that upload a video of their own quality performance of the piece.

Meanwhile, why not a class action petition of monopoly practices since competitor preamp bundles were not offered? Say someone wanted a Darkglass module, for example.

I’m a very early adopter of 3Leaf via the original Groove Regulator. GR2 remains my fave.

Spencer’s always seemed alright by me, and helpful via email. Makes creative pedals among the best in class. A bit eccentric, and can actually play. Is he America’s Björn Juhl?

I was comparing my Octabvre MKIII to an OC5 I borrowed (and an OC2 clone I have) a few days ago.

The OC5 is almost spot on tone wise with the OC2, and has a bit more volume on tap. Latency is great, almost instant, I couldn't really feel the difference to be honest. Didn't care much for the +1 octaves and the poly mode, but I was never really into POG tones either.

Octabvre MKIII doesn't do an exact OC2 tone (with the tone knob fully rolled off and Tim switch on). It doesn't do that "hollow" thing, it's fuller and has more mids, but also feels tighter in the low end compared to OC5/OC2. Turning the tone control up brings even more harmonic content, so it goes even further away from the OC2-like tones. It is LOUDER than either OC2 and OC5, for sure, and has more volume on tap.

Tracking on both OC5 and Octabvre was excellent. OC5 seemed to hold notes longer better, but did seem to glitch out in places where my Octabvre wouldn't. Both were great with tracking though, and it's just a small technique adjustment.

So, if you're looking for that exact OC2 tone, Octabvre MKIII does not do that. I however, prefer it, it feels meatier, more pronounced and has a character of its own. Still the best analog octaver to me.

Thanks, to this day I still haven't owned a OC-2, or any boss octave. Being my favorite type of effect, it is a little strange. I started off with the Mk2 when it was out, then bought the mk3 when that changed, still have it (thank god). I've heard the new Subsonic is a very nice recreation of the OC-2, I personally love the output/headroom/tracking abilities, but where it fails is where the Mk3 picks up with flexibility. COG has actually been used the most on my board lately, down+up, but even their down octave is worth trying, its very nice and has its own character. There's still a few more I'd like to try, maybe one day I'll circle around to a real Octaver
