MKII wins for me. Though, as I noted in when doing my Doom 2 comparison, "the MKII has more low-end presence and the MKIII has more mid presence so the distinct voices of the original and new Doom 2 mix with the suboctave in different ways. And also drive downstream filters in different ways." Sometimes I want the sound of the MKIII hitting the new Doom 2. But normally I prefer the MKII into the old Doom 2 and, for variety, the new Doom 2. (Why isn't it just called Doom 3?!? Ugh, it sound different enough to justify it and it would remove ambiguity as to which Doom 2 people are talking about.)

I had an MKIII and went back to an MKII, and am currently rocking a Mini. I thought the MKIII sounded great but couldn’t hang with the footswitch spacing.

When I was using an octaver a lot (MKII), the wide foot switch spacing was just so much better and practical. I tend to veer away from two-foot switch pedals that are close to the 1590B enclosure dimensions (that are orientated vertically).
I get the whole pedalboard space saving applications of pedals like that but I hope Spencer goes back to the larger enclosures.
I’m like the others that went II to III and then back to II.
I was actually able to work with the footswitch spacing fine, and mine was strictly a tone choice. I’ll never part with my Mk. IIs

My MkII arrived today along with a few other goodies so I hope to put it through its paces with the MkIII tomorrow.
I really love the new units with their sleek finishes though so it’ll be interesting to see whether I’m trying to judge with my eyes or ears.

I'm in the market for a mk3 and have lots of trades available
Thinking about it, it may be a MKI with a Tim switch mod. Either way, it’s glorious and it’s massive.
I just played my mkiii live today (again). I love its mids rich tone, it works wonderful in the mix. Plenty of lows for my taste. I soloed the sub too and it was massive, but tight and not muddy at all. I’m a mids guy though, so mkiii is the perfect version for me.
Just wanted to add to this, I’ve had 3 different mkIII’s (first two were catch and release after getting a Cog T16 and then later the T47), and on first impressions, the Icefall might be my favorite sounding one.
The differences are subtle, but I think @Batrachos nailed it here. I will say though, I thought this version was actually more dynamic (which is the main reason I preferred its sound the most). Also, it does seem to have more mid presence than the other mkiii’s I’ve had.
Disclaimer: this has all happened over the course of 3 years, and all kinds of things could have happened to my ears over that time. To put it short though, this Octabvre is here to stay.
I know this year has been bananas, but for the most part, I’ve seen a lot of positive reviews from ppl that were able to score (I’ve slept through a lot of Broughton drops so I know the feeling with those who didn’t
).What I hope to convey from this long-winded post is that Spencer seems to be improving his designs. He was already putting out dingers, and he could have left it at that, but it’s pretty cool to see him expanding on his already solid pedal lineup. With the talk of larger batches and these pedals sounding better than ever, I’m excited for what’s in store in 2024. For those who haven’t scored yet, the future is bright at least!

Got mine today. Just hooked it up and quickly messed around. Wow it tracks very well. Significantly better than my previous octaver- MXR Bass Octave Deluxe. Surprised how bright it gets on the tone knob- will likely keep it quite a bit to the left. Man the Sub only switch is such a revelation. Sound is meaty, forward, punchy, strong. Great gain amount on the octave tone makes it super useful vs the OC-2. The man definitely makes a nice pedal. If there’s a “better” Octave pedal out there it’d have to be astounding.
Now that I have a Proton, Doom2, and Octabvre, hopefully I can relax about stressing over having to deal with dude’s…unusual ways. What can ya say, talented people are often weird.

Genuine question: how are you able to remember the nuances of pedals so precisely over so much time? I recall what I liked and didn't like about every piece of gear with which I have spent time, but I do not trust my memory enough to truly A/B two different pieces of gear unless they are both in front of me. I certainly don't trust my memory when it comes to something as subtle as the mids of two or three different examples of the very same pedal over the course of three years.
If this were true--and it well might be (I simply don't know)--then why wouldn't Spencer have said something about the tweaks he made to the circuit? He did for the Doom 2.
I want to stress that I am in no way saying I don't believe you. I don't have the information to make such a judgment one way or the other. I am saying that your post raises these two questions in my mind.

To answer your second question first, I’m not going to pretend I know the engineering involved in these guys, but considering ppl are reporting subtle variations across batches, I’m thinking it’s more of how the pedal is tuned rather than actual circuit tweaks (once again, not an engineer, just my hypothesis)

You bring up a very good point here (which is why I put the disclaimer in my original post), but I had my first mkiii for two years before I found a T16 which knocked it off. I missed the sub switch and scored a Ghost mkiii during last years drop (which actually was the most underwhelming of the 3 and ended up trading it rather quickly). However, staying with your point, my impressions could have varied with the outside weather or my current mood. You’re totally right.
The central point of my post was to try to bring some positivity in here. I know Spencer has made some business decisions that left a lot of us scratching our heads (or rage, lots of rage actually) this year, but I think his heart’s in the right place. I go on his Instagram and see 95% of people complaining on his posts, I see complaints getting shouted in discords, and then I come to this thread and feel like some days I need to go take a shower after reading a few posts (crude joke I’m making here).
Coming from someone who has had one of the s***tiest years in recent memory, I feel like the whole world has had one too. Furthermore, I recently had one of the most heartwarming events take place over the last week on this forum. Maybe I’m trying to white knight this year; maybe also give something for others to look forward to? Idk, but my only intent is to want everyone to feel a little less miserable.
Regardless, I wish everyone in here an awesome rest of the year and an even better 2024!
