I haven't played a high gain mod of the revoiced Doom. In fact, I don't think it exists. Spencer mentioned a guitar-tuned version, but that's not the same thing as a high gain mod given the revoiced version already incorporates a lot of those differences. I have, however, owned a high gain mod of the original Doom 2 as well as the standard versions of the original Doom 2 and revoiced Doom 2.

I previous wrote about the original Doom 2 HGM here. The high gain version is pretty much what is sounds like: it offers more gain (plus expanded treble and a different midrange crossover). Totally unnecessary if you use it for low-gain bass synth. Perhaps necessary if you use the Doom 2 as a typical fuzz or with electric guitar. The revoiced version already has a lot more gain than the original so I can't imagine many people would need a high gain version of the revoiced version. Plus the original HGM Doom 2 inspired the revoiced Doom 2 which should tell you how similar they are. Not identical, but quite close.

I've tried OG DOOM 2 (Ghost), HG mod (Jade) and DOOM 2.1 (Cosmic Purple)

I personally think the HG mod is not ideal for bass out of the 3. I also didn't love it for guitar, but it more so just wasn't good for my style of playing. The crossover and mid-frequency nodes are a bit higher and don't work quite as well for bass IMO.

OG DOOM 2 circuit is my favorite for stacking with octave and filter, DOOM 2.1 (the newer circuit design) is better for straight in your face fuzz. They both work fine vice versa, but they have differing strong suits.

Just my personal take though.

To clarify: this was not simply a revoiced Doom 2 (like the Cosmic Purple), but a Metallic Jade modified for high gain? Do you know if that's the same thing as the tuning for "guitar use" Spencer mentioned before the Blood Red release?

So all of the 304 stainless steel enclosure DOOM 2s are either revoiced ("DOOM 2.1" as some of us jokingly call it) or further tweaked for the High Gain (HG) mod (synonymous with what Spencer sometimes refers to as the "guitar mod").

I personally feel that the revoiced DOOM2 has plenty of gain for bass.

I hesitated to buy the release this time as I kept thinking how can I incorporate it into my setup. I bought it anyways to pair with the mk3. That pair is pretty much ideal and I can use the doom for a heavier character type fuzz. It's so unique in its own right. It's been like 2.5 years since I've owned this combo and I'm excited. Been a while since a "new" pedal purchase has been made by me. Lol.

Spencer in shambles?


Had a chance to A/B my OG DOOM 2 and Revoiced DOOM 2 again last night

Definitely still agree with my original assessment.
Solo fuzz: re-voiced is king.
Synth stacked: it's closer than I remembered, but the fat, cohesiveness of the OG DOOM 2 just does it for me. It is like, scary good. More resonant too somehow. But that's just me, I'm a farty-synth bass kinda dude.
