Excellent sight reading material written in bass clef. Very melodic and less intimidating than some bass specific material out there.

I have this book and totally agree. Many people will suggest things like the Bach Cello Suites or Simandl or things of that ilk, and while they are fine as a goal, for the player is starting out learning to read, they are just too much.
Trombone books, beginning and Intermediate level are really good. The Hering book is really good. If you can get through that, and it isn't all that tough, you'll be set for 80% of the reading gigs you'll get. The only problem with Trombone books is, they are geared for band playing and the majority of the etudes are in C, F, Bb, Eb, and Ab. Keys that are normally associated with wind band music. For the sharp keys, take a look at begining and intermediate Cello and Bassoon books. They will be more geared to preparing students for orchestral playing, and there will be more sharp keys (G, D, A, and E).

I've own the trumpet version for decades, but never checked if a trombone version existed. Probably will pick up a copy for more bass sight reading material.
