40" scale Quake bass in production (2000USD)

Really? Why? It's different for sure but over engineering?
Angled cables are pretty much out of the question with this, plus I can't imagine it makes it easier to work on the output jack. Also I suspect once you've had one of these for a little while you're gonna end up grabbing the cable itself to unplug it instead of the metal jack itself, which will wear on your cables.
 
But you have less bass frequencies with thinner strings tuned down...
If you want more clearance you just use thicker strings, with more tension, on a regular scale...

Exactly, less bass frequencies mean less mud! And when you are tuning down to double drop d or double drop c, less mud and the increased clarity from the improved harmonics are extremely important!

Would love to try one of these some time!

I disagree with everything you said lol. But I understand your view.
 
My DB has a longer scale than that and a MUCH higher action, so the fingering doesn't worry me. What worries me is finding my place.

It's actually easier to accomplish shifts on my DB than on my fretless Jazz because the "free" neck space (between the chicken @$$ at the top and the body joint at the bottom) is many fewer notes (neck joint about the 7th "fret") and I can rest my forearm on the back of the neck joint to help find positions in between. A big shift on the electric doesn't have any markers to me find it. (With frets, I can use them to make sure I'm starting from just the right place and I can afford much less accuracy in shifting).

All of which is a roundabout way of saying, that's a LOT of smooth neck to try to find your way around.

(Says the guy building a 36" 5-string with a second one planned).

The luthier used to be known as 'Knuckle Guitar Works' but has combined his various projects into 'Kalium Music'. The original Quake basses were fully custom and far more expensive.

The longer scale allows thinner strings for a particular tension, however also, a longer string is inherently more flexible. The combined result is that a string has the flexibility and clarity of the next higher string on a normal bass, so a B has the clarity of a 34" E, F# has the clarity of a 34" B etc.
Half of the extra length is acheived through shifting the bridge to the right, the player experiences i have seen over many years are usually that it is surprisingly easy to play.
Only Kalium will have strings for these, I'll bet. :-)
 
I remember seeing stuff about quake basses years ago. I think it's an interesting concept but Low A is plenty low enough for me and my 37" dingwall does that amazingly well. Also I'd be very concerned about someday not being able to find strings for these. It's bad enough with the long scale dingwalls with only a few brands making strings with a long enough winding length for them. I bet they'll be the only maker of strings for these.
 
Pretty interested in this. I play a stiletto studio 6 with a low F# instead of a high C. I was looking into a 7 string so I can have both but knowing I'll have more than enough length to get a low C# makes me want to ask if they can make an 8 string:laugh:

I thought about that as well. With the location of the jack and the addition length of the body, the jack would be farther away from the player.

Imagine standing and wearing a J bass with a side mount output jack. The jack is nowhere near the gut, but sort of close to the leg. Now bump that at least 2.5" to the right. If it WASN'T recessed it would be hanging way out there, just waiting for the singer bash into.

I would 100% use and angled cable for this one. I'm saving my milk money for this bad boy!

Nope, the way this hangs on even my double-wide body, that part is off to the right, doesn't poke anything.
 
So... If the idea is that a longer and thiner string is better we could say a hair of 100 meters tuned down to low B should be awesome..
Come on... its non sense...

No, it's basic science.

There's a reason the low notes in a piano are made with long strings and the high ones made with shorter ones.
There's a reason mandolins are short and upright basses are long.
That reason is physics.
