400 Tube watts into 2x AMPEG pf115

Yeah, I looked at your facebook and I read the event wrong. I didn't look at the year and I assumed it was 2012 and I got excited thinking there was going to be a show in a couple of months.

Back on topic: I looked up the specs for the PF115, and it says it can take 450 W. 2 should be able to take the VBA 400 at high volume. The VBC 412 cabs Marshall makes to go with the VBA 400 are rated at 400W, and I have cranked one of my VBA 400s through a single VBC 412 cab without any problem.

Certainly did not want this to open the 'tube watts vs solid state' discussion. I only used 'tube' as an adjective to give perspective on what type of rig I use. For the record though I agree a watt is a watt but given I am talking about pushing a tube amp close to saturation, sonically this is a different phenomenon to say a 400W SS amp being pushed close to the edge.

End of the day though I was most interested whether 2xPF115s would safely handle MOST of the power of the VBA and then if they would, would it still sound musical or is it likely that the speakers would start to distort.


Lots of great feedback so far, so thanks, and yep 4 of these cabs would be ultimate, but if it came to that Id just go ahead and get a 4x15 in one box!

I must say I was really surprised how nice the PF115 cab sounded at moderate levels. Id almost say one of my favourite vintage sounding cabs. I keep the tweeter switched off and appreciate the nice smooth bottom end but still get some sweet upper mid growl and dont find I am wating for any more high end. So the impetus for the thread was to see if I could recreate this at higher volumes. My (limited) experience in the past is that some cabs/amps can sound good at moderate volumes but suck at louder volumes. I have also experienced the reverse of this too!.

Considering I could easily make one pf115 lose it's solidity with a 180w tube amp......

Unless you're in a doom band, to be fair, you'll probably very seldom need to turn it up more than you can safely do with two PF115 cabs. Just it would be most awesome with four.

Tell your tour manager or booking agent or whoever SanAntonio is a big metal town, man. Everybody there likes the $#!+ outta some good metal. A lot of us from Austin go down there to see shows too. Of course Houston and Dallas/Ft. Worth are metropolis's and would do well too. Corpus Christi down on the Gulf is another metal/'80's rock lovin' town. It would do Exciter some good to come to Texas...we'll take good care of ya.


@ the OP. A pair of PF115's would do well in that normal region. When you start talking about cranking big tube amps up to where they really spill the beans....you can blow a pair.

Heheh... I have no doubt about that! Our management, and booking agency, are well aware of the fact that we need to get down to the US more often, and they're working on it. Hopefully, a tour will result!
