$4000 jazz/funk rig

Lucky me, I just came into about $4000 and want to get a new bass amp/cabinet or combo. I'm a jazz/funk player with two Mike Lull custom J-basses, fretted and fretless. I'd love to hear some opinions about favorite amps and WHY. What are your thoughts on great amps such as Thunderfunk, Epifani, EU, Ampeg, Fender, Mark, Ash, Ag, Eden, Hartke, etc., etc. Also your views on the accompanying cabinets and effects that you think are killer and indespensible for a jazz/funk guy. BTW, my current rig is a Hartke 7000 going through an Eden 410 cabinet with an Alesis MidiVerb4 multi-effects system.

Bottom line: if you had $4k to build a great jazz/funk setup, what would you buy?

THANKS in advance for all your help!!!

-Avalon U5 (Awesomelyyyy clear and great settings) $540

-Bergantino IP-310 (Powered Cabinet) $2,400

The rest ($1,060) I'd spend on Q-tuner BL5 pickups (I play 5's personally) which would be $300. I would then spend $180 on a Demeter BEQP-1 onboard preamp. With the money left I'd probably get my bass one of those Plek setup treatments and some Bayou cables!

With that budget I'd still end up with what I have: a Markbass Little Mark II head for $599 and a couple of custom cabs for less than $800 for both (Nahas 1-15 and 1-12 +tweeter). One is an 18x18x18 rear ported cube, the other a tiltback cab very similar to a Hartke 1-10 Kickback in dimensions, also rear ported. Both are 8 ohms, both have 500w Eminence Kappa drivers. Tone for days, louder than I need, small enough for most cars, lightweight. Done.

The remaining $2600 can be better spent since this need would already be covered.

If you had to spend all 4k I am sure you could.

It would be nice to have a 410 neo cab, maybe Epifani or Berg plenty of other choices out there. Then a smaller rig 2x10 or 1x12. Many people like 2 112 cabs and you can choose to take one or both to a gig depending on the need.

I'd also go for 2 quality heads one light weight and one bigger more powerful lead sled or even tube.

Personally I like having a 210 and 410 that way I only need to carry out a single cabinet. I also have a Glock HR which I think is one of the best sounding heads although big and a pain to carry around, sometimes I feel lazy and want to take out the 4lb Acoustic Image. These options also insure that I always have a back up if something needs repair.

To me it's not about one set up but a few nice pieces so you always have the right set up for the gig.

You didn't specify which Eden 4x10 but chances are if your happy with it no need to change, not sure I'd make a statement like that about the Hartke stuff though.

I'd buy a behringer half stack and spend the rest on crack! But hey thats just me. J/k :D:D It it were me i would spend the money on a road trip to go to stores to play all the stuff your asking about. That way you'll find something that is all you want from an amp. And take your old rig with, maybe it suits you more then you think.

Don't forget Dr.bass. I think 3 way cabs are the end all be all.

I have now heard 2 of them and I am waiting for my 2460 to come in.

You can find reviews on all the heads here. On thing that might helps some. In the blue bar at the top of the screan there is a search function link. Click it, then click "go advance" Type in thunderfunk and use "title only" and you will get some fair results.

What is most important
Volume? Weight?
Are you playing with horns and a loud PA, do you always have PA support?
I would say try acmebass.com and look at the LOW B 2.

Final answer to cover all situations.

A Dr. Bass 2460 in 4 ohms with the 1260(112 with an 6" mid driver) neo slant face or a 2060 neo cab(210 with mid driver). this way you can take either the small cab, the large cab, or both to a gig.

the 1260 on top in slant will make sure you hear yourself while the 2460 gets the sound to the audience.

As for a head, I think funk and jazz sounds would be somewhat aggressive. I vote for the Genz Benz GBE 1200. You can check out sound clips at genzbenz.com . Also, consider the Genz Benz 212 neo. I have heard many good things about it.

You will still be far below $4000 and have a fantastic Rig.

I suggest NOT getting a power regulator. If you get rack effects, no alesis. They are kind of noisy. I say try some pedals for any particular effect you need.

If you do go multi effect, I suggest line 6.

Hughes and Ketter makes an amazing tube drive pedal called the "tube factor"...yummy.

Oh, also get covers for any cab/cabs you get. Speakon to speakon 12 gauge speaker cables, a right angle - straight 20 footer for you with a spare. And a folding dolly.

No monster cables IMO.

hmm, a good rack, no rack bags unless you get a very light head.

And with the money left over an all tube head is a must. If I had extra cash right now I would get a small head like a Little Mark II and an all tube head like the ampeg SVTII (non pro), or Ampeg SVT CL.

I disagree with bergantino IP cabs. I have not been impressed with bergantno cabs...and for the price its just not that cool. Buy light gear if you can. Epifani cabs are nice...and light.

I'd probably get an Eden Nav + some poweramp, rack it up with a tuner, and get a high-end 4 ohm NEO cab so that my cab would be light, since my rack wouldn't :O

For jazz/funk, I'd either get an Epifani UL410(II) or wait until the Eden XST-neo's come out

Tough question...Are you looking for a Paul Jackson type tone, maybe a Marcus tone, or a Chick-era Stanley tone?

I've heard great jazz/funk tones out of anything from a P-Bass through a tube head and 4x12 cab to a Fodera with a Walter Woods and Epifani cabs. I think that genre is alot more accepting of different bass styles and tones. Personally, I love the SVT II non-pro or a V4 for more raw-in-your-face-just-lay-it-down funk---and a Thunderfunk with an Epifani UL310 for the more modern, smoother and tighter funk.

For straight ahead gigs, I like the Walter Woods alot--and think it kills with most Bergantino cabs.
