4001 Mashup

The miter box is pretty much done.

Seems to make 90 degree cuts as well. It's little tight, but I think it will loosen with time. Now it's a matter of finding some time to cut the fretboard.

So, any updates?

I've been trying to work out getting a proper band saw so I can do the neck. The problem is not so much the purchase of the bandsaw itself, but rather where I'm going to put it. So, no, unfortunately, I haven't done much of anything on this build since the last update.

Give her a chance! She just finished the experimental acoustic bass build, nailed it per usual. She makes us "one bass per decade" builders look like pikers. I'm preparing to be thoroughly humbled again.....

Thanks for the vote of confidence :) I'm still deciding if I should smooth the back of the acoustic. I definitely need to put another coat or two of clear on the front. It's really been too chilly to do much of anything in these parts. Good thing winter only lasts a week or two here.

Ya, I musta missed that one! Please post the link here.

By the way, I'm almost ready to put in a toaster pickup in my Jetglo 4003. I'll likely PM you in a few days. That'll be a nice start to the new year :)

Maple et all:
In case you hadn't heard, Aceonbass is back on the RR forum, which should make a big difference in the level and accuracy of technical discussion over there (at least until he gets banned again for Impure Thoughts, then we will have to suck it up and invite him back home here on TB). Until that dark day, we will read his posts on RR!

So now that the axe bass is pretty much done, I realized I had better get on another build or I'd have no excuse to avoid practicing. We pretty much finished the "car port to garage/workshop" conversion project, so now I have an air conditioned inside workshop.

We even have music, courtesy of a 12 volt power supply and old car stereo and speakers.

So looking at what I have, I saw that the fretboard I originally cut has a pretty severe drop off at one end, but I fortunately found a cutoff, so I'll have to slice off another piece. I had thought to start cutting the fret slots today, but first I'll have to slice off a new fretboard. There's also a few small items I want to finish off in the workshop, so this may have to wait a few days until I can get to it. At least I have another working project I can use as an excuse not to practice.

There's still the matter of the serious lack of a proper band saw. I may just try the jig saw again, as I was able to make it work on the axe bass build.

Oh, and since this build has really changed since it's original inception, I edited the title. Also, enjoy the clean workshop views - I'll mess it up soon enough :P

Is this going to be the Devil bass?

I think that'll be next, after this one. I've had this one on the back burner for almost a year - five string, Ric inspired body shape and head stock, two pickups, still haven't decided on the finish. I originally thought I'd use that 4001 jack plate I got off of eBay, but now I'm thinking I may not.

Can't wait to see this one Maple, I have been stuck in spring cleanup/boat prep/house painting purgatory for two months with no luthiery in sight. Shop layout looks good! Any thoughts about a knock-down spray booth? I'm going to have to build one when I go to paint, something along the lines of 1x3 strapping wrapped in plastic and hinged at the joints so I can fold it flat. I'll frame openings for a couple air filters and a fan exhaust. Right now EVERYTHING is covered with yellow pine pollen on Cape Cod, so I'm shooting for early fall to paint. Is this one painted or natural? Just noticed what looks like Ric-ish body halves on your bench, is that for the Mashup?

This build has been on my mind lately, so I'm glad to see some action here again!

I've been seriously considering using this body shape on an 8-string double-course build:

I love the Ric-like horns with the symmetrical lower bout! I'm just hoping that the next few months will allow me some shop time...

That Leafenbacker headstock design is actually more elegant then the original Ric design, which in it's larger incarnations can look oversized. The current iteration of Ric headstocks looks a little smaller than the 60's ones, but this still looks nicer.

Thanks, yes, I'm very happy with the headstock (Thanks @JIO ) and body shape. Could never have done either without the help of everyone here!

FWIW, I think this design may be far enough away from a Ric to actually sell.

Right now, my spray booth is the back yard :P

I thought I decided that I was going to paint this one, but I have a feeling after I see all that maple goodness, I may just leave it natural.

And yes, those are the body wings for the mashup on the bench.

Hey Mapleglo

Wow, I was confused and then I realized that this thread was kind of abandoned last December and then resurrected by you last tuesday. So, I am not sure that I have missed as much as I originally thought!

Anxious, as always - to see this build unfold! I am always a big fan of all of your builds! Love the Axe build and I really enjoyed hearing about all your Comicon adventures!
