410 + 115 question

The other way around, an 8ohm 15 and a 4ohm 210. All three would be getting roughly 1/3 power. You'd need either a 2ohm stable mono head or a stereo head.

I've got the 2 Ohm head already.

I also have a bunch of cab combinations and I just LIKE the 115 in the mix, but only at lower volumes (50% or less). I've been fortunate to not bark the 115 so far.

I might be fooling myself here though to think about it. The 115 takes the amp down a few Ohms and maybe the added Wattage makes the 10s sound a little bigger. I dunnow. :hmm:

Yeah - the 810 and another 410 with the 2 Ohm combo with ANOTHER set of 210s is awesome! That's 14-10s. Seriously I don't even need that much air in motion, but it's nice to have the capacity to do it.

Sometimes I use the 210 combo and a 410 underneath it and it's all well and good too.

Your best advice is try out the combo of speakers in a store, even if not the same brand, to get an idea, but in this case if it's a second hand deal, go for it. Wirst case scenario sell the 15 if you don't like it.

You can speak tech specs and drawing power all day but you might prefer something different and a LOT of folks do. If the combo of mismatched speakers was such a bad thing, I doubt you'd see cabs like the Mesa Powerhouse 1000 (I think the 1200 now and also a cabinet which I think KILLS any 8x10 I have played) and Genz Benz wouldn't advertise their "signature rig" as an Uber 2x12 under an Uber 4x10.

you know, a lot of people are saying it's a matter of taste, and it is. victor wooten does it and he sounds good. but vic doesn't study audio physics, and the truth is that audio physics are not on your side.

however, the op was going to get the 115 no matter what anyone said, so i feel this has been a rather pointless discussion. he's looking for validation, not education. that''s fine, though...hope it works out...but the idea of matching a 410/115 together is solely based on looks.

A lot of folk still live under the illusion that a bigger cone produces lower depth. This may have been true many years ago but is certainly no longer so. look at Acme with its tens and PJB with its fives. Both capable of reproducing the fundamental of a B string.

The general thesis, that small drivers can do big bass, I think bass players have known for a long time.

But even Acme, who post magically wonderful specs, don't claim to do a Bo.

For specs with conventional engineering, figure F3 around 60 Hz for a 4x10. See [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] for example. A 1x15 can be tuned lower, but lower overall SPL.

Good bass doesn't mean a lot of fundamental. It's the same way as for an adult male, none of their fundamental is transmitted by telephone, yet we are heard just fine.

Nah, the best match will always be two or more intelligently combined cabs that sound better together than individually.

Yeah baby!

:D

Joe.
intelligently combining cabs suggests to me that someone read up on the subject and learned a little something about audio physics. it doesn't suggest that someone looked at a 410 and a 115 cab, and decided that since the 115 has a bigger speaker, it will put out more lows than the 410. that's engineering by looks.

I agree the op will get the 15 no matter what, and I also agree that in general a 410/15 combo is a mis-match, and I also agree that 2 identical cabs are always a good match, and that a 210 and 15 pair up nicely as well, and that aliens will eventually destroy earth.

I've seen MANY Orange Amplifier ads and pictures showing their 410 bass cab on top of their 115. I've also seen a fair number of shows where the bass player had this setup.

Anyone care to comment on the Orange's specifically? I recently bought a OBC115 and was looking at getting a matching 410 but im kind of unsure now...

Wow, never imagined this post would provoke so many oipinions, and i am grateful for them all. I am in search of opinion,s not justification. truth is, the 115 is a good price, affordable, and i haven't the option to get another identical 410. the original worry was about the mismatched power and I think the comments about putting the 115 on top contrary to intuition, has a lot of merit. I think its worth going for and if it's not working out i can always trade on again. I must say my current setup (Peavey Tour 450 + Hartke 410XL) i have is far, far better than what i had before, (Marshall MB4210 combo plus 115 cab) and that's down to the astonishing performance of a mesa 410 cab I played thru a cheap calsboro head - I knew i wanted a 10 cab after that but could not afford a mesa. I just miss the grunt of a 15" speaker cab, and I can gig it alone to check out the dynamics or pair it up with the punchy 410 cab for squeezing the full potential out of the head.

Al, there are hundreds of world class bass players on tour right now using 410+115 combinations (with the 410 on top; it just looks weird the other way). If that is what you want to do, and if you dig the way it sounds, don't worry about all the academics you get in this forum.

It troubles me that so many still believe that, in all cases, a 15" speaker is for lows. This is wrong. Its down to the cab, driver and porting. I own a 2x15 which is brighter with more mid push than many 8x10s and 4x10s.

I've given up trying to sudgest to people that 410/115 is not ideal, I'm not and would never say you should'nt do this (if you try and like then great) but so many assume its what you are supposed to do without really looking into it. Marketing really sucks when it misleads so many.
