:::5 string Bassists that tune E-C:::

You can always play the E fretted ... there is no magic to an open E ... with a bass since you are not playing 4 and 5 note chords tuning the whole bass up and down shouldn't be a problem. I still think 4 string basses should be tuned DGCF and not EADG.
 
My teacher does. He says he likes the soloing possibilities better with that tuning.

Funnily enough, the first time I saw Janek Gwizdala in person (on the street corner in LA of all places), he reminded me of my teacher. Interesting that they tune their 5-ers the same way.
