I seem to remember Muzz Skillings from Living Colour telling Bass Player magazine he was going to start doing it. I think he left the band before he recorded with that tuning though.

I thought Bona's was tuned E-C, but I could be wrong.

His is B-G, and he ripped out the active preamp, so his bass is all passive now, from what I hear. Props to him. I've always thought that after Garrison, the E-C thing is just a really trendy gimmick that I don't really have any use for, practically or conceptually.

I would think a DGCFA# would be more useful than a EADGC tuning.

It would have a more useful range, but the fact that so many tunes are written in E probably overrides that.

You can always play the E fretted ... there is no magic to an open E ... with a bass since you are not playing 4 and 5 note chords tuning the whole bass up and down shouldn't be a problem. I still think 4 string basses should be tuned DGCF and not EADG.

Hmm, pretty sure Hadrien is tuned standard BEADG.

My teacher does. He says he likes the soloing possibilities better with that tuning.

Funnily enough, the first time I saw Janek Gwizdala in person (on the street corner in LA of all places), he reminded me of my teacher. Interesting that they tune their 5-ers the same way.

So far, no 5-note chords, but I do 3 and 4-note chords quite often. Thought about tuning down a whole step but realized, for my own music, I don't really do much in D so the change would gain me little. For now, I'm doing the E-C thing.
