5 String Jazz with "BEEF" ... Is a Sadowsky P/J my answer?

Option 1) If you really dig Lakland, convince Lakland to build you a DJ 5 with the Fralin P/J combination. Why? Gotta be little cheaper than a Sadowsky Metro brand-new.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Lakland has no 5-string P pickups that they've chosen or made for their basses. I have heard that they haven't found a 5-string P that they liked.

Personally, I'd like a 5-string P/J bass with one of the new 5-string Dark Star pickups in the P position, but that ain't happenin' for a while . . .

One should check with Lindy Fralin and not with Lakland on the availability of a pup for 5 string precision. Until recently, Lakland was not creating their own pups (Bartolini or Fralin).

It would be great if Fralin did produce (I don't know?) both pups. The sound would be awesome. I am sure it would provide the BEEF Iotnet is seeking!

That is a good idea. I will be presumptious and speak for Iota in that I know he doesn't like the shape of fender five string necks. That could make a Reggie Hamilton five a deal breaker for him.

I believe they are about $2400. It is a custom shop bass, but one of their "production" basses.

On the other hand, my 55-01, while a great bass is not delivering what I want -- even with the Audere.

Have you considered replacing the pickups? There was a thread in the Pickups forum recently where someone took the Korean Bartolinis out of a 55-01 and replaced them with a pair of (I think) Nordstrand Fat Stacks. There was a little extra room in the routes but it seemed like a great mod from looking at the pictures.

I had a 55-01 for a while. I loved it, but the electronics just weren't great.

That's a good idea. I have those in my Valenti, and they seem quite "beefy."

Dwayne, why not purchase a Sadowsky after NAMM? I can read between the lines enough to know you won't be satisfied until you have one. Buying a NAMM or a used instrument will allow you check one out without losing very much, if any, money. You can buy it now or you can buy it later but you won't be happy until you buy it.

Try a Fender RBV. It doesn't sound exactly like a PJ, but it does sound incredibly beefy (in fact, I used that exact word when posting a thread about the one I had), and they have great low Bs.

+1!! This was my first thought upon reading the original post. I had one of these for a while, and it was a spectacular bass!

With the independent ser/par/sc switches there is a huge range of tonal possibilities. I remember my favorites being the bridge soloed in series. All of that Jazz growl with a plethora of thick and room-filling yet non-muddy tone.

Stop trying to change his mind, y'all. He digs the P/J thing so let the man give it a shot! Iota, with some patience and luck you might be able to get your hands on a P/J 5 to demo before making the jump. I know for a fact that Mike Lull makes a fantastic P/J 5 and I've heard nothing but good things from the Sadowsky proponents on this board.

I think your best bet is to start with what you're looking for and that is the Sadowsky. One of the best things about Sadowsky is the fact that they retain their value so well, and their tone is highly sought after for good reason.

I totally agree with this and was just telling somebody on the phone the same thing! It will give you that Jaco esque bridge tone all day but it doesn't do a full JJ (with the PUP selector between the 2 PUPs) to me. The P sound is much closer to a P than the J is to a J. The P has that distinct modern P sound that I hear on all of Roger's P's that I have played. I had a NYC Ultra Vintage P that I sent back so I could get the UV Jazz I have (and so Hugh McDonald could have it )and I told Kevin that if I was going to get a P that modern sounding that I would probably just wait for a PJ...The PJ is F A T! Much thicker than a J or a P on it's own in my opinion...A very cool tone and unique in it's own right! Send BigMikeW a PM and get his take or waith for him to chime in here...I'd be curious to see if he agrees! I say GO FOR IT! You have a 7 day return period if it doesn't work out....I don't think you will need it though, I just bought my 11th Sadowsky about 15 minutes ago!!
