5 String Jazz with "BEEF" ... Is a Sadowsky P/J my answer?

Got your PM and figured I'd respond in here as well.

Tommixx, Biker and Rob (and others) are right the PJ5 will get you the beef for sure. Will it cop a JJ tone. No. But it can get closer than you'd think.

The suggestions of an Alder/Morrado (or rosewood) combination in a PJ5 would also be my suggestion. Also, get the P reversed. It really makes the B tight. I flipped one of mine recently just to test it out in the original position and it was noticeable. The reverse is much better.

Roger's P is definitely a modern take on a P and one that I throughly love (I have two of them). It's big and fat without being boomy or muddy. It also does not lack in the punch department.

Roll that blend back towards the J a bit and you will get a J J "type" sound though not a complete JJ. I tend to have mine this way, dead center or just towards the P. A few times I have used the P solo'd and it really sounds like a P but again more modern. Roll the VTC off about half and you can get a real deep P tone.

Based on what you are looking for I don't think you could go wrong with a Sadowsky PJ5. The Metro's should be out soon but those will have the P body. If that doesn't bother you then I'd suggest trying one of those ASAP. I prefer a jazz body personally.

This is one of those Divine Providence things...I just sold my UV70 and my Stingray 4 HH to a good friend of mine from Nashville on Sunday. He had been playing a '64 P and a '96 American Jazz and was looking for a couple of good active basses. He played the Ray on Saturday at a gig and brought me a check Sunday morning. I had my UV70 out playing it and he wanted to play it so I let him and he tore the check up and wanted to know how much for both!! LOL! I just deposited his check today and was cruising the Sadowsky site and didn't see anything that bit me and came by here and bam...there it was...LOL! My UV70 was a bit on the heavy side for me to play live and it sounds like this one is gonna be a pound or 2 lighter!!! Mine didn't have the finish this one had either!! It looks killer from what I can tell...I am going to order a Tort guard for it in the morning from Kevin and have it here when the bass comes in...I am stoked again!!

Nice bass! I'm very curious.... why the constant churning of the Sadowsky's (11?). Have you found issues with the ones you've sold (dead spots, playability problems). Why constantly sell and buy similar basses, especially when, in my experience, the Sadowsky's seem very similar to each other (much more than any other bass line I've had the pleasure of playing).

This seems to happen with a few Fodera and Sadowsky players.... massive churn of instruments. Again, just curious:confused:

Actually, that is a very legitimate question...I am a lot like bikeplate I think. I like trying the different configurations looking for the "perfect" one for me! LOL! It is somewhat of a disease! I have had:

NYC Vintage 4 - 3
1 Ash/Maple with Humcancelling and single coils, 1 Alder/Morado - 1 Alder/Rosewood - 12" Radius on all

NYC Ultra Vintage 4 - 1 - Alder/Brazilian Rosewood 9" Radius my current player

NYC Vintage 5 - 2
1 - Alder/Morado - 1 - Ash/Maple with Single coils

Metro Vintage 5 - 2
1 Alder/Rosewood - 1 - Ash/Maple

Metro UV70 4 - 2 - Both Ash/Maple

Metro UV70 5 - 1 - Ash/Maple

I have also had for brief periods a number of other NYC and Metro models on trial (can't remember how many...Maybe Nino knows, it is probably a joke around the shop by now LOL!) I have probably spent enough on shipping them back to the shop to buy another Metro (or at least it seems that way LOL! :D )

I had no intention of selling the UV70 until the second he wanted to buy it...just so happens that brought me to this one though...so you never know why things work out the way they do! I sent back a wonderful NYC Ultra Vintage P that I was smitten with and wound up with the NYC Ultra Vintage J that I have now...I consider it a VERY good move on my part because as much I liked that P everyone loves the tone I get with this Gold J...

The really interesting thing is that you guys just know me for my Sadowskys...the truth is that I buy and sell a LOT of other basses including Laklands, Music Mans, and Fenders. I have bought a couple of Music Mans, a Lakland, and a Vintage Fender (with the idea of selling these after I am done with them) in the last couple of months...I have already sold or traded both of the MM's and the Lakland and I have a buyer for the Fender locally....:D

I know it may seem like I go through a lot of gear, and I do, all the more reason you guys can ask me questions about the stuff I go through though, right?? :cool: Hope that helps a bit!

Cool...you know, looking at my list I realized I have left something off...I have actually had 4 NYC 4's. I forgot about a White Modern 4 with a Maple Board I got over on another Forum! LOL! So that makes an even 12 (I think that's all...LOL!) Unlike Mr. Bowlus, I have accepted that I can't have them all...but like Mr. Bowlus, I am REALLY trying! :D

Thanks, Man! I ordered it from Kevin this AM...lucky me they had one on the shelf and I'll probably get it early in the week with the Holidays. I told him to ship when he got a chance. The seller of the bass is gonna wait until Tuesday for me so it doesn't sit in a cold warehouse somewhere for a few days over the holiday...let me know how the sessions go...send me roughs as you have em!!!!

You could grab a Metro Jazz 5 and do a retro fit on it. The pickups are available, a pickguard is easy, just need it routed.

That's what I was considering if I wanted an MM/J Sadowsky 5er.
