5 string multi-scale build

PS I wanted to chime in with the rest of the details for those of you who are wondering:

5 string multi scale neck through
35"/33.5" scale lengths
Ash/purplehart/wenge neck
Ash fingerboard
Camphor burl tops, black walnut body wings
Single Bartolini humbucker
2 band Bart preamp
 
May I ask you what would be your aproach if you would decide to do a scarf joint? I ask this cause I guess that you would need to have a compound angle to keep the headstock plane right.

I believe that scarf joints are strictly a cost cutting solution and are inferior to one-piece necks in every way. This is just my opinion gentle readers, born from my particular experiences. ;)

That being said, I would first get my fingerboard to final dimensions and work backwards from there. Determine your headstock angle and how that will correspond to the angle of the nut. Once you factor in the thickness of the headstock, and how much that will "undercut" the fingerboard, you will begin to see that this will have to be an extremely precise operation from start to finish.

Even without my prejudice toward scarf joints I would say it's more trouble than it's worth but if you decide to do it please let me know, I would be interested in seeing it.

Quickie...

This is the body core after I laid the back piece over it to trace the masking tape. Both pieces are pinned. Not present is the back.

The back piece is on and ready to be glued. Did this as a dry run. It's ready to go. The masking tape is to keep the corner of the cavity cover recess clean of squeeze out.

...And after it's been glued up, I remove the tape and clean up the inner corner. There is no squeeze out and the cover fits flush.

Here on the end grain you can tell that I've resawn the wood to make the cavity cover.
