I get funky looks when I show up to places with my 6-string. I hardly ever use the high C in a band situation, so I could just use a 5er, but I love the tone and feel of the bass, so I've no reason to switch over yet.

I'm waiting for a situation like OP's, but it hasn't happened yet, thankfully.

In the June issue, Adam Nitti is shown on page 14 with a 6-string "bass." That's not a bass, that's a guitar. Anything over 4 strings is a guitar...

What morons. How does the tuning affect the song if you can play the damn notes? They didn't even notice at first.

I never drop tune, even if the guitarists do, as it's very limiting to me. My friend's band plays in drop C. I just used a four string with heavy strings tuned down to open C when I subbed in for their regular bassist, who uses a standard tuned six string bass.

Yeah, I think you could probably pull off a 5 string in an indie band. If it was a 5 string rickenbacker or jazz or something in a 'normal' shape I doubt anyone would notice at all.

I show up with a 5 string bass of my choise ... if the guitard doesn't like it too bad. Some guitar players think they can dictate what the bass player does. They seem to think the bass player is a 2nd rate musician and possibly even a 2nd rate person.

Just tell me what chords you are playing and I will play the bass line.

I played a 5 string in an indy band. I don't think it was weird image wise... in fact I think it set us apart from all the other indy clone bands.

i still haven't had this experience where the guitarist thinks they can tell me what to have to play on. I am almost looking forward to it now...

That said, I have had guitarists complain that they can't read what chords to play when I play my 5er- I tell them to figure it out (it's not hard!), or demonstrate my lines an octave higher so they can hear with their silly eyes.

slightly OT, but am I the only one that tunes his 5er to CEADG for drop tuned metal? I know it's technically tuning UP, but it makes it so easy!

I really thought showing up with a 4 string tuned B E A D was a creative way around the "no 5ver" issue. Fit the purpose. Preserved my arpeggiation. etc. I guess you just can't outsmart stupid

Now that I think of it next time I run into this I'll show up with a 4 string in the same format and raised 1/2 step on all strings to C F Bb Eb. See if they can figure that out.
